User Review: Lowe Alpine Special Expedition (pre-NOLS)

Rating: rated 4 of 5 stars
Design: front load internal
Size: 8000+
Number of Pockets: 3
Max. Load Carried: 110
Height of Owner: 6'5"
Price Paid: $389

Purchased this pre-NOLS backpack from a previous Genet Expeditions staff guide. The demo pack had seen a few runs up the West Buttress before the generous man (Ken B.) sold it to me for $20 (I was a starving high school student working for him at REI). This pack remains in wonderful condition after two (2) ten day expeditions in the North Cascades and Olympic Mountains, three/four summits up Mt. Rainier, and one week of Alaska exploration. In addition, I travelled Europe for four months with the pack; all none the worse for the wear.

All stitching, lining, straps and cordura remain in premium condition. The simplicity of the pack (one long main compartment with top and bottom access) creates less "stress" points and flex locations. As a result, heavier loads can be obtained and you'll experience fewer maintenance issues on the path. I do not recommend this pack for tourism/travel as you'll be spending too much time digging for your passport in the main compartment. Perfect pack for glacier travel.
