User Review: Mammut Men's Castor Pants
Fabric: Schoeller WB400 Membrane
The Castor Pants are not just for skiing anymore. They are also a "kick ass" alpine/ice climbing pant! I've been guiding in Colorado, Montana and Wyoming all winter and the Castor Pants have been my "Go To" pants for any activity, be it skiing, ice climbing, snowshoeing or just playing with the kiddies building snow forts and throwing snowballs.
After wearing these pants all winter I haven't noticed any of the usual "wetting out" that occurs on some other waterproof-breathable fabrics. On those days when I am outside for 16 hours at a time in nasty, wet and sub-zero weather I have never noticed any moisutre or wind breaking through the fabric of these pants.
The Schoeller fabric is waterproof, breathable and extremely durable and at the same time being light enough with just enough stretch built into the fit that I have never felt that my skiing or climbing was being compromised. Even performing figure-fours in these pants is casual.
I fit my pants one size too large (I'm usually a size 24 but I choose a size 26 instead) so I can layer insulated pants underneath. I guide in Alaska and when it gets really cold you will see me wearing Castors over lightweight down pants OR on nicer days just over a baselayer. Even getting these pants one size too big, the pant legs fit well enough that I don't catch crampon points in them. The built-in gaitor is a nice touch for skiing although some may see this feature as overkill for climbing pants. The ventilation leg zips work well when pushing hard on the uphills. Workmanship throughout is high quality.
