User Review: Mountain Hardwear Men's Stretch Typhoon Jacket
Source: bought it used
Price Paid: $50
USED JACKET REVIEW: Waterproof jacket that can be packed tightly and feels good on bare skin. Little breathability (as with most waterproof shells) but does a great job of keeping the water out of both the actual shell and pocket areas.
- Conduit silk inner lining
- Little breathability
Please note that I bought this jacket used. It looked like it was in great condition when I purchased it. I don't know when it was last given a waterproof coating (if at all) before it arrived.
I went to college in the mountains of North Carolina at WCU (...joke is that it is short for "We Carry Umbrellas"). Needless to say, we say a lot of rain. I gave this jacket three stars as it kept me dry, but didn't score high with wicking sweat and breathability. While I didn't apply any type of waterproof coating as often as I should, some of the conduit silk deteriorated early than expected (because I bought it used?...not sure).
If you apply a waterproof coating throughout the life of this jacket, you will be fine. It will keep you dry, but you may pay the cost of sweating inside the shell.
The hood has an adjustment near the back of the head. I prefer those that adjust the opening of the hood. When I would tighten this hood, it would work, but not as efficient, especially if I were wearing a hat. The waist is also adjustable and works well when tightened.
There is abundant pocket space and zippers for breathability (no mesh, just an opening) near the triceps of each sleeve. I often had these open when there was a light to medium rain. I wouldn't get wet, but it would keep a breeze through. The upper chest pocket is very handy, it's at the left chest and can be used for change or even a small point and shoot camera. This pocket is waterproof too.
I snagged this jacket on some thorns a few times, seem very durable and well constructed. No tears.
Due to the lack of breathability and wicking ability as well as my own experience with the conduit silk deteriorating, I have given 3 stars. Good jacket for light use, if heavy use needed, keep searching.
EDIT: Added photo of inside jacket, conduit silk.
