Garmin Topo U.S. 24K Southwest

rated 2.5 of 5 stars Detailed map set of the southwestern region for Garmin map GPSes, but some well-traveled trails and hiker-relevant waypoints are not included. I'v been a somewhat grumpy Garmin customer for many years now. I am on my third Garmin GPS, an eTrex 30c, which is at least hanging in there for a lot longer than the last one did. It took Garmin years to get around to fulfilling promises to supply versions of it software for Macs, and the Basecamp software used for viewing and planning is klunky and non-intuitive,… Full review

Garmin Foretrex 601

rated 4.5 of 5 stars This is an excellent GPS for outdoor, hunting, fishing, hiking, biking, backpacking, and military type use. The small form factor, good battery life, and ease of use along with the ability to customize some screens to give you exactly the data you want at a glance makes this unit my #1 pick for outdoor adventures. I purchased this GPS to use primarily on hiking and backpacking trips. Opening the box and removing the device is pretty straightforward. Setup was easy and the system and button layout… Full review

Brunton TruArc 15

rated 0.5 of 5 stars Do not buy this compass. Buy a better one. You will anyway if you buy this one. I found nothing to compliment the actual compass. It is poorly constructed when the bezel falls out when trying to set declination. Loss of the bezel in the field could get you killed. There are two degree scales on the bezel that confuse setting direction of travel because the mirror is on the wrong end of the base. If you align the north end of the needle with the red needle on the baseplate while sighting through… Full review

Cammenga Tritium Lensatic Compass 3H

rated 5 of 5 stars I have used the milspec/issue Tritium H3 clam since 1979. 4 stars for accuracy and occasional pivot point/card slip, but for the $, it's great. Lasts about 10-12 years, then donated to scouts. Also used the Pyser M-73 (degrees) Black Liquid Prismatic Compass and MILS a lot in locations not friendly to U.S. It too is 5 stars. A great compass. Beware of Amazon and eBay knockoffs. If it's a life support kit, DO NOT skimp.     Full review

Garmin eTrex 10

rated 1 of 5 stars Poorly designed GPS. Thumb stick on the e-Trex 10 does not work. Pressing it straight down is supposed to be the equivalent of ENTER. It takes numerous tries to achieve enter. The screen features are not distinct. This a very poor product that deserves a recall from GARMIN. I am trying to get my money back. Full review

Suunto X9i

rated 2 of 5 stars I have owned two (2) X9i watches for several years which I purchased when on a cruise. After a couple of years the wristbands started to break and chip. Wristbands on the watch housing are made out of rubber. Every year afterward the wristband started to chip and break more frequently. Paying the amount for two watches you would think the rubber parts of the watch would last more than a few years. I recently called for service and the service dept. said that it would cost between $45-$65 to replace… Full review

Garmin vivosmart HR+

rated 2.5 of 5 stars The Garmin Vivosmart HR+ is definitely not perfect, but packs a lot of useful features into a relatively compact package. I have been using the Garmin Vivosmart HR+ for about a year now, mainly for day-to-day health tracking and hiking. Here is a summary of what I think is good and bad about it. ProFeatures: Provides lots of features including step count, heart rate, GPS tracking, sleep monitor, Bluetooth connectivity, notifications from phone and control of music on phone (I don't use this). Size:… Full review

Brunton TruArc 15

rated 3.5 of 5 stars Such a pity about the previous reviews...This compass works well! The sticker on the bottom is purely to protect the base of the capsule before the user receives it. Open the box take out the compass and peel the whole sticker off the base and there you have it, perfectly map worthy. I'll admit that there are some small flaws like the rotation of the bezel (would be nice to have some resistance) and the printing of the bearings is not perfect, but the rest of the compass does a perfectly good job. Garmin eTrex 30

rated 3 of 5 stars It's a scam. When you pay $150 for a GPS you expect at least it would ship a decent map with it. But, no, it came with a map that doesn't even show road to your home. Okay, maybe that was a bit harsh. I think the unit is quite sturdy, and the satellite acquisition is fairly fast. It's one unit, provided you carry enough batteries, that can get you home. Every time I read about someone gotten lost and died on the trail, I always asked, why did not he or she invest in a GPS. This is my investment… Full review
