Brunton TruArc 15

rated 3.5 of 5 stars Such a pity about the previous reviews...This compass works well! The sticker on the bottom is purely to protect the base of the capsule before the user receives it. Open the box take out the compass and peel the whole sticker off the base and there you have it, perfectly map worthy. I'll admit that there are some small flaws like the rotation of the bezel (would be nice to have some resistance) and the printing of the bearings is not perfect, but the rest of the compass does a perfectly good job. Garmin eTrex 30

rated 0.5 of 5 stars It's a scam. When you pay $150 for a GPS you expect at least it would ship a decent map with it. But, no, it came with a map that doesn't even show road to your home. It's a scam. When you pay $150 for a GPS you expect at least it would ship a decent map with it. But, no, it came with a map that doesn't even show road to your home. When you try to load a map to it, it's so difficult it made MS-DOS of the early 1980s look simple. This is the very last Garmin I would ever buy. I have a Nuvi that cost… Full review

Cammenga Compass

rated 3.5 of 5 stars Very well built, impressive compass, at least until the lens fell out. I bought two of these compasses over the years. The first one I lost on a hunting trip, and when I went back to look for it, well, the olive drab paint is difficult to spot in the grass. Take that as a plus or minus, depending on your perspective. The second one I bought I used for all types of activities. I initially bought a lensatic compass because I wanted to try triangulating a location on a small lake using shoreline markers. Garmin eTrex 10

rated 3.5 of 5 stars If you're a beginner, you'll find the quick startup and owner's manuals woefully inadequate. I had to call Garmin twice just to find out how to get the page that shows me how far I've hiked. I've used a Garmin GPS 60 for years, so I'm not a beginner. When my GPS 60 died, I couldn't find a simple GPS that would tell me how far and how fast I've hiked. The GPSes were expensive and extremely complex. FINALLY, the eTrex 10 showed up—just what I'd been waiting for! However, the instructions (quick… Full review

DeLorme State Atlas & Gazetteer

rated 4.5 of 5 stars The Delorme Atlas and Gazetteer is an indispensable tool for the outdoors person when planning their next excursion. It is chock full of places to go for every type of outdoor activity, from where to camp including amenities at the campgrounds, places of interest for sightseeing, places to hunt and fish, and even includes species of interest, along with many other types of information. If you have not heard of it the Delorme Atlas and Gazetteer is an indispensable tool for the outdoors person when… Full review

Garmin eTrex 30

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Compact, lightweight, and reliable handheld GPS receiver. Includes an electronic compass and barometer. Lacks a touch screen, but touch screens are ineffective in bad weather. The Garmin eTrex 30 is a battery-powered handheld GPS unit. It has been around for a long time, and at first sight it looks old-fashioned. Its display screen is small and is not touch-sensitive: you control the unit using buttons on the sides and a joystick on the front. Having said this, I’m not sure that a touch screen… Full review

Suunto Core

rated 1.5 of 5 stars Second one just quit again after less than 12 months. Not acceptable for the price. Talk about love/hate. When this thing is new and working as it should it was easily my favourite. Unfortunately it just can't go the distance. Cosmetically it will wear out and scratch way faster than you'd expect of an 'adventure/outdoor' watch. That alone I could probably forgive but I'm onto my second watch in under two years now and it's just failed out the exact same way the first one did. While the screen still… Full review

Garmin GPSMap 64s

rated 4 of 5 stars Solid successor of time-proven GPSMap series, made for extreme conditions. But the number of improvements over GPSMap 62s leaves much to be desired. The button-operated Garmin handhelds are still not for everyone. Background I’ve been an active user of Garmin GPS handhelds since 2002. The first one was eTrex Vista—old, monochrome and equipped with 24 MB of memory for maps. It had really weak receiver with tendency for losing satellite signal in ALL less than perfect conditions (inside the pocket,… Full review

Brunton TruArc 15

rated 1 of 5 stars Not designed by someone who ever used a compass. The idea of a compass with a global needle is always a good, one would presume. Pity is that the execution is horrible. The declination adjustment angles/inclination angles and the grid lines at the bottom of the capsule are printed *on a sticker*, which means, that (1) you cannot align the capsule with the grid lines in a map and (2) it might just fall off. In most online images this is not obvious because the background is also white, buyer beware! Full review
