Gaia GPS App & Offline Topo Maps

rated 5 of 5 stars Gaia offers up-to-date and detailed GPS topo maps for Android or IOS devices. Best of all the maps are downloadable so your phone can be your GPS even when out of cellular range. I had a Garmin eTrex and then a Garmin 450 GPS that I have used the past 12 years. Both devices were well utilized and displayed good accuracy and much usefulness.  I recently bought the Canada Topo Pro maps for my Samsung Note 3 for $9.99. I liked and used that app for the past few months. Having a big 5.7" display to… Full review

Falcon Guides Hiking North Carolina

rated 4 of 5 stars If you are hiking in North Carolina and want to visit as many trails as possible, than this is the book for you. It covers a lot of the trails available in detail. The Background This is an amazing book and I specifically purchased the eBook version to help me plan camping/hiking trips when I was in North Carolina. I used this guide to plan and go on 6 trips. I had 3 more planned but didn’t have enough time in NC to complete them all. The book provides a good level of detail on all of the locations… Full review

Polar AXN300

rated 0.5 of 5 stars I used the AXN300, which was a load of rubbish. I wouldn't trust Polar ever again. My watch was repaired four times and constantly let me down and cost me a lot of money to own and maintain. The manual says I can replace the batteries, but Polar declined all responsibility. The repair facility in France is a rip-off, charging over 20€ plus battery to change a battery which doesn't last very long. The watch is massive and snags on clothing and sleeves. I apologise for my review being so negative. Full review

Brunton 8099 PRO Eclipse

rated 2 of 5 stars Good idea. Poor construction. Over the years, I've had a lot of compasses as a 17-year-member and Team Leader of a local S&R organization. They just interest me and I get a lot of use from them. I've owned several Bruntons, Silvas, and Suuntos among others. Every Brunton I've owned eventually got a bubble in the capsule. None of the Silvas. The disc (needle) of the Brunton also jumps off the needle it rotates on, causing it to tip off at an angle. It's just bothersome for the amount of $ one… Full review

Garmin Fenix

rated 4.5 of 5 stars I took this guy out for our first field test on the Buffalo River a few weeks ago. Really great watch for the avid outdoors man. The trackback feature came in handy several times on that rocky terrain. The storm alarm was a lifesaver too. The river rose 5 feet during the night! The Garmin Fenix is the product for you if you are heading outdoors. If you like to bike, hike, run, fly, swim, float, or fish then this little package has a lot to offer. It has multiple profile settings that you can choose… Full review

Brunton 10B Baseplate Compass

rated 4.5 of 5 stars There were two major needs for this compass: 1. It must have 2 degree increments and 2. Must be able to set declination. It has both! I bought this compass for navigation in the backcountry. It has worked fine. I can set the declination to my area without needing any tools. The only thing that worried me was if I would accidentally adjust the declination because there is no tool needed but I haven't had any issues with it. For a compass for under $15 I think this is a fine addition to the Ten Essentials! Full review

Rite in the Rain Outdoor Journal

rated 4 of 5 stars I filled up two spiral bound field level notebooks for my ecology research in Florida last summer. The waterproof paper worked very well despite the humidity and daily unannounced thunderstorms, although any pen used will create smudges and dry slowly. If you are looking for a product to use in the field, whether for work or pleasure, then these notebooks are excellent for the price. You can order them in just about any size, with options for type of paper and binding cover. Keep in mind that if… Full review

Rand McNally Foris 850

rated 4 of 5 stars Great GPS for under a $100. Does everything I need. I bought this for around $85 shipped from Amazon for rattlesnake hunting the mountains of Western Pennsylvania, geocaching, and for hiking with my wife and daughter. With all honesty, I've only had one other GPS and it was a Magellan Sport I found it to be worthless. So I have nothing else to compare it to. This thing is very easy to use. It picks up satellites very quickly. It is loaded with maps for trails, forests, and bike trails, etc. It is… Full review
