Recent Navigation Tool Reviews

DeLorme inReach SE

rated 4 of 5 stars The safety of an SOS button connected via satellite to a monitoring response team combined with features you can use on every trip. Those features include two-way texting including localized weather reports, live updating of your personal online map and others you can choose or ignore as desired. The device and subscription service are not cheap, but for those venturing far afield, especially those who go alone, it gives a good return on the investment. Lots of function packed into a pretty small… Full review

Brunton TruArc 5

rated 4.5 of 5 stars This is a nice well made compass with the basic set of features you should have if you intend to use it for navigation. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this compass to anyone looking for a compass to use while backpacking, hunting, etc. First off, I want to say that I received this compass as a gift for being a past Reviewer of the Month here at Trailspace. I think it might be helpful to give you an overview of my background with respect to navigation skills so that you can put my review in perspective… Full review

Magellan Triton 500

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Rock solid unit. I had a Magellan Sportrak Map unit, but this blows it away with USB connectivity, map downloads, SD card support and so much color! Very nice feel and the buttons are great. I use it mostly for geocaching, and having all the cache data in one unit is fantastic. Androids and Apple products can do this too, but not with the precision of a purpose-built unit.  I just cannot get over the map features while hiking the hills looking for a geocache. Yeah, I got it for $4 + tax at Goodwill… Full review

Garmin eTrex 30

rated 1.5 of 5 stars I am only weighing in on eTrex as to use of it without buying the expensive Garmin map subscriptions. It has worked fine as it was able to synch with Google Earth when the data is downloaded to my laptop. However, Garmin basecamp, which is the program to download from your device to a computer, will no longer work with Google Earth. The support team at Garmin tells me that I must use Garmin maps. I bought the device not wanting the map subscription and because it worked with Google Earth. Now it… Full review

National Geographic Northville/Raquette Lake Map - Adirondack National Park

rated 5 of 5 stars Excellent map! Up-to-date, includes reroute of the southern section. The Nat Geo maps are the new benchmark in trail maps. Full review

Casio Pathfinder PAG80-1V

rated 5 of 5 stars Received a PAG 80 as a gift that I've wanted in 2008, it was about $100 at the time. It is a great watch to have with you. But, you must make adjustments to the ALTIMETER and Barometer to get correct Compass direction. The only issue I have after so many years is the band. The little eye broke and the band gets in the way... Full review

Blackwoods Press John Muir Trail Pocket Atlas

rated 5 of 5 stars The is a great, extremely light, pocket atlas/set of maps for doing the John Muir Trail. I picked up Erik the Black's Ultralight trail guide for the JMT last summer for use on a couple of section hikes I was doing. The trail guide is only about 2.5 oz, very thin, and about the same dimensions as most paperback books available now days. Each of the maps in the guide include an elevation profile, information on camp and water locations along with a variety of other information useful during your hike… Full review

Casio G-Shock Rangeman GW9400-3

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Features for days! Altimeter, barometer, compass, thermometer, sunrise/sunset data, and much more. Ease of Use: This is something that I felt could use some help. I may be spoiled on the ease of touch screens now, but cycling through all the menus is a pain. Price For a solar powered "ABC" watch with a ton of features that can stand up to the abuse the Rangeman can and still look great, I think the price is a steal. While the Rangeman may be the best G Shock watch on the market, it doesn't mean… Full review

National Geographic John Muir Trail Topographic Map Guide

rated 5 of 5 stars If you are contemplating thru-hiking the John Muir Trail (or any section of it), this John Muir Trail Topographic Map Guide does an excellent job of gathering all the needed information for planning, plus having detailed maps of the entire trail and surrounding terrain. Comparison of size of National Geographic Yosemite map with the John Muir Trail Topographic Map Guide (USGS 1:250,000 map in background) Background: I have to confess up front that, despite having hiked and climbed on all seven continents,… Full review
