Wow, I've worn the MH Epic as a shell and worn the MH Alchemy as well. I wanted something that would stand up to mountaineering in Alaska and not be crunchy in the winter cold, therefore softshell. The Mithril is it!
The jacket is taped everywhere and has the sealed zippers. The exterior is flexible and waterproof while the inside is a thin fleece. The hood is a continuation of the entire jacket, not skimping on the construction or fleece. There is a nice flap behind the main zipper and two adjustments for the hood. The cuffs have elastic as well as a velcro closure. The waist has an adjustment also. The front of the hood includes a stiff brim.
Overall, I feel safe in this thing! The jacket has just the right amount of features without adding too much weight. In fact, the features it does have are smaller and lighter than the way Mountain Hardwear makes their jackets. It's warm, it's quiet, it's waterproof, and it's comfortable. I would have paid more money for it!
