Ridge Merino Balaclava

rated 4 of 5 stars A full face balaclava that is a strikes a nice balance between light weight, comfort, and warmth. Fit: I have a rather large, bald head, measuring 24 1/4 inches or 61.6 cm or 7 3/4, depending on which measurement you use. Generally speaking, I fall outside of the “most” category when hats are labeled as “one size fits most.” In addition, I have a prominent (i.e. big) nose, which combined with a big head, make balaclavas that fit comfortably hard to find.   Ridge Merino’s balaclava fits… Full review

Sunday Afternoons Adventure Hat

rated 4 of 5 stars With the wide brim all the way around and the back flap, constructed of UPF 50+ soft nylon fabric, with multiple sizings and an adjustable strap in the back to help it fit your specific head, and a chin-strap to keep it on, this is the most comfortable and functional sun hat for kayaking or canoeing, hiking or trekking, or even gardening or yard work, that I've found. My dermatologist said that I needed to get a sun hat with a wide (3.5+ inch) brim and made of UPF protective fabric. The Sunday Afternoons… Full review

Black Rock Gear The Original

rated 5 of 5 stars This place is great. Very unique high quality items you will not find anywhere else. Had one of their down hats for a few years, and it is by far the warmest hat I've owned. I ripped it two years ago (my own fault), and the owner of the shop was nice enough to repair it for me free of charge. Really stands behind his products. I also have cold hands during winter, and so I got the Foldback Mitts. No more cold hands! And it's a great design. Full review

Buff Visor

rated 3 of 5 stars Beautiful, but pricey! Buff Visor. The popular headband company that wanted to make a hat with the addition of a totally useless neoprene visor that double-acts as a sweat absorber if you flip it against your forehead until you get a headache or pass out from the smell of neoprene. And that is why I ripped it off. Much better now!The length is now just over 50cm.The Coolmax fabric ensures wicking, but this particular headband is too hot compared to my other generic one.  It offers 95% UV protection… Full review

Icebreaker Oasis Balaclava

rated 1 of 5 stars Garbage made with nice material. When I put this thing on, the back of it stops about halfway down my neck. WHY would you not cut it so it was long enough to easily cover the back of your neck? The one thing I really need a balaclava to do is to protect my neck from drafts. This alone is enough for me to send it back. The second nail in an already well-sealed coffin is that when I pull it up over my face, a single exhale fogs my glasses over at room temp. The nose flap doesn't help at all. Overall… Full review

Outdoor Research Sombriolet Sun Hat

rated 4 of 5 stars Outdoor Research's HUGE hat. Bought the medium size and it fits well in my 56cm head after some minor fine-tuning with the drawcord. The microfiber headband that OR calls TransAction is very soft and comfortable and wicks sweat evenly in a radial pattern (obviously) resulting in accelerated evaporation due to the larger surface area of the brim. The brim is not round as someone would except but kinda oval to provide better coverage for the back of the neck. Sombriolet also features a front vent… Full review

Sunday Afternoons Eclipse Cap

rated 5 of 5 stars This is without a doubt the best lightweight, flexible cap I've ever owned. It can be completely folded (including the brim) and carried in your back pocket. At 2.2 oz you’ll forget you have it along! I’m a hat hater! I rarely wear a hat even though I own many. Since I wear eyeglasses, there are times when a hat is required such as a sunny golf match, hiking into the setting sun, a hard driving rain, heading to a public place with “hat head”, morning camping with crushed hair... When a hat… Full review

Headsweats ProTech Hat

rated 5 of 5 stars Fantastic, breathable hat that shades your neck. I live in Arizona and this hat makes hot runs bearable. There are a couple of features on this hat that elevate it from sun hats by others such as Sunday Afternoons, Tilley, REI, and Outdoor Research (all of which I've purchased prior to this hat). The biggest difference is breathability. The material used in this hat doesn't trap the heat as much as the other hats, so sweat and heat dissipate faster. Secondly, the cape or drape on the back of the… Full review

Black Rock Gear The Original

rated 5 of 5 stars The Black Rock Gear Original is a simple, functional, quality down beanie, deserving a place on everyone’s head. It gets my highest honors by being a part of my ultralight equipment for multiple thru-hikes/section-hikes this year. Testing Conditions: When I first received my Trailspace 2016 Top Reviewer beanie, I marveled at what a nice garment it is but also wondered when I would first have a chance to use it (being that I live in Florida). Turns out, I have worn it over 40 nights this past year… Full review
