As stated by Shake and bake this is a good light and yes, you do need to use a halogen bulb for better light. I have used it at night for hiking and around the camp. Great inexpensive light.

Have owned this for 10-15 years and it is the only headlight that I own. I would recommend using halogen bulb for extra brightness. Seems to suck batteries down quickly.  It has been flawlessly reliable.

This was my first headlamp and I loved it dearly, but looking back I realize how much it sucked. The beam was full of artifacts and was not very bright, but it was my reliable "take anywhere" source of light for many years, but I would not recommend this light. Princeton Tec makes much better products than Petzl and are better on batteries and their beams are awesome bright, white, and smooth as can be.
