photo: Platypus Meta Bottle + Microfilter water purifier

A quick easy water filtration bottle. Scoop and drink treated water directly from the bottle or squeeze water through the filter into another vessel.

Pros

  • Fast treated water
  • Unbreakable bottom/impact resistant top
  • Removable/replaceable/cleanable filter
  • Easy to use
  • 1000 liters of treated water

Cons

  • Can leak under pressure if not tightened properly

When I first received the Platypus Meta bottle with Microfilter I thought it was just another filtered water bottle. Well, I was wrong, as it has become my go-to water treatment device for hiking and backpacking.

Platypus took its already popular Meta soft bottle and added a removable micro-filter to the top that allows me to drink directly from the large mouthpiece or to squeeze water through the filter into another vessel. The bottle is comprised of a soft 1-liter bottom, an impact resistant top with removable filter and a cap with integrated lanyard.

Rather than having to either pump water into a bottle or use an electronic treatment device, I simply unscrew the bottles top, which also holds the filter and fill the bottom with water. Squeezing the soft bottom of the bottle forces the water through the EPA certified filter and removes 99.9999% of bacteria and 99.9 % of Protozoa, including Giardia, E.Coli, Cryptosporidium, Cholera, and Salmonella.

It's the easiest filtering system I have used so far, no batteries are needed and there are no squeeze bags to break.

Both the impact resistant top and unbreakable bottom have held up really well over the summer so far. The filter unscrews from the top for easy cleaning at home and Platypus says the filter is good for 1000 liters of treatment. At 8.5 ounces it's on par with the weight of a 1-liter bottle and electronic treatment device. It is, however, a couple of ounces heavier than the lightest combination out there, but for me, the bullet- proof bottle makes up for the slight weight disadvantage.

Because the water is forced through the filter by pressure there is none of that hard sucking needed to drink from other water filter bottles. Filtering a liter of water takes less than 30 seconds, you do however have to make sure the two pieces of the bottle are tightened appropriately before squeezing or water will leak out.

Having my water bottle and filter together keeps thing simple and when backpacking anytime I can reduce the number of items I have to carry it's a plus. For just hiking, the ability to filter water whenever it is needed from almost any source gives me an extra margin of safety.
