Power Practical Luminoodle

rated 4.0 of 5 stars
photo: Power Practical Luminoodle battery-powered lantern

I love the flexibility of this light. If it weren't for a major problem I had while on trail, I would have rated it a 5 star. I will say that their customer service was top notch and they stood behind their product.

Pros

  • Great lighting flexibility
  • Easily recharged on trail
  • Battery can charge other devices

Cons

  • Needs a strain relief where the power cord meets the light cord

The "Luminoodle" light rope has magnets built into it which make it convenient for hanging on any steel surface. It also comes with some universal ties to hang it on tree limbs, tent poles, etc., and a white bag which you can hang up like a lantern.

The rechargeable power pack has a built-in flashlight as well. It can run off any power pack with a USB port, so I was able to use it with my Goal Zero unit, because I forgot to bring the cable to recharge it.

The problem I had was, the very first night out, I strung the light rope through the universal ties that came with it, plugged it in and...nothing!! The flashlight portion worked, so I knew I had power, but the light rope was dead!!

I made due with my headlamp that night, but decided I would try to see if I could figure out what was wrong when we stopped the next day. Knowing that it would probably void any warranty, but not wanting to be without a light for a week, I decided to cut the tube open and see if I could find anything obvious. Sure enough, it was quite obvious, the wires from the power cord had pulled out of the soldered connection to the light strip.

So I had found the problem, could I fix it?? With an extra set of hands from my friend, a JetBoil stove, and a multi tool, we were able to re-solder the connections. Once re-connected, we reinforced it with some white athletic tape and other than no longer being waterproof right there, it was good to go. It worked great the rest of the trip.

Once home I contacted the manufacturer, explained what had happened and what I did. They responded that I may be the first to re-solder one on the trail and that they would gladly replace it. I had to fill out a short form and in three days had a new one in hand.

I even told the rep that if they wouldn't replace it, that I would buy another one, because I liked it that much. I also told him that either way, I would be adding some kind of reinforcement at that connection to the new one. Hopefully they will look into doing the same.

I would recommend this light, but with the disclaimer that it does have a weak spot.

Great little device for lighting the campsite. Lots of configurations.

Pros

  • Light
  • Light
  • Convenient

Cons

  • Needs a dimmer

I got this for Christmas last year and have used it several times. It goes for hours on a small battery pack like you would use to recharge a phone. The stuff sack is handy and it comes with some reusable locking ties. Nice spool to hold it also.

The only thing I'd change is to put a dimmer switch on it.
