Quest Viper

rated 4.5 of 5 stars

I LOVE this tent! It's simple to set up: can be done in the dark via headlamp in 5 min. The three pole design is durable and provides a lot of backbone in high wind. Very waterproof (rained on us for 15hrs straight and never leaked a drop). Two doors and convertible top provide tons of ventilation and star gazing. HUGE vestibule is nice for storage and/or changing. The inside has ample headroom thanks to the single rod construction, and is VERY roomy for 2 but will sleep 3 if need be.

The ONLY thing I don't like about the Viper is it has no zippered ventilation on the fly like my Moss Thunderdome. Although condensation is not a big issue here in the Rocky Mtns, it may be something to consider if you're in more humid climates.

All in all the Quest Viper is an excellent tent for car camping, and, if you're not a weight freak, backpacking as well. The only prob you may have is finding one for sale. I searched long and hard for several months before I found this one on eBay. Retail is around $350 and worth every penny.

Sleeps: 2
Ease of Setup: Simple: 5min
Weight: 8-9 lbs
Price Paid: $350

I've owned this tent longer than I've owned a cell phone. I love this tent and haven't any plans to replace it. I look for another one on eBay just to have two. This company made great tents that were easy to set up and handled all that nature could throw at them.

Pros

  • Ease of set up
  • Weather resistance

Cons

  • Company is gone.

Two entries and vestibules, so you never have to sleep face to face with those you don't really want to with. Great ventilation. Rain resistant to the max. All-clip setup can be done in 5 minutes.

Source: bought it new
Price Paid: Three hundred in 1999 dollars.

Good tent and quite mountain worthy. Handles winds of 40-50 mph really well. Never leaks. Does get condensation, but I live in the East. This tent is very comfortable to sit in and has plenty of room to stow gear, sit w/4 people, and not feel cramped. It has excellent ventilation for summer and a vetibule that one can change in. When you grow up and get married there is enough room to acomodate the little one for many years. Has been to the ocean and Mt. Shasta with great memories. I do wish the doors were a bit bigger.

Design: 4 season modified dome
Sleeps: 2.5
Ease of Setup: Not too bad. 5 min max.
Weight: 8 lbs
Price Paid: $225

The ultimate in the all season category. Period.

Super ventilation via dual opposing door and 2 zip out roof panels.

Excellent storage. Two vestibules--one hooped 12.5 sq ft and one 3 sq ft. Great dimensions for two. About 4 feet wide at the center and is just over 7 feet long. Room for gear at head and at feet. Center pole maximizes head room the entire length of tent. Superior stitching through out.

Fabric is light grey and base is a purple. Great low impact colors.

Highly recommended.

Design: all season 3 1/2 pole configuration
Sleeps: 2
Ease of Setup: simple once you understand its logic
Weight: 7lbs 13ozs
Price Paid: $325-350 retail

Cozy for two large people but doable; great solo tent. incredibly good wind tent; a little warm for middle of summer camping with fly battened down, but great ventilation through mesh ceiling tent. Terrific in chilly spring and fall (northern Wisconsin). I've been in 60 miler per hour gusts in this tent and it hardly even shook. Well made product.

Design: 4 season backpacking
Sleeps: 2
Ease of Setup: relatively simple- fly takes a bit of a lerning curve
Weight: 8.5 lbs
Price Paid: $300 (i paid)
