Raven Designs Gear Asgard A2

rated 4.5 of 5 stars
photo: Raven Designs Gear Asgard A2 four-season tent

Lightweight, highly focused for weather, safety, and weight, tough little tent. Few frills, lots of design features. Very versatile.

Pros

  • Weight vs. volume.
  • Waterproof
  • Ventilation
  • Strong in wind — stong in general

Cons

  • Fabric is a bit "tinny" - rattles a small bit
  • Can get hot if vents are not open
  • No real vestibule - but fixable

This review has been a long time coming. I bought this tent after coming upon it on the web while searching for military tents. After speaking with the owner a bit via email, I selected the two-person Asgard A2 tent.

The tents are primarily targeted for the military and mountain climbing community. This generally means lightweight, strong, waterproof, windproof and neutral to camo type coloring. This tent is awesome for us regular folks, though.

I've used this tent on a ridgeline in the Smokies on a very windy and rainy night with nary a problem. The wind hit gusts of over 60 mph, with blowing rain to follow. No leaks. The design features include double seams with a Gore-tex like fabric, single wall — light weight and yet very breathable.

The front door has a full-size mesh for still nights. And there is a small rearwards vent. The overall tent design is a combo bivy and tent, which minimizes weight while maximizing space. It works well, with some small "rattling" of the fabric compared to regular nylon.

The two poles can even be inserted and set up while in the tent, during a bad rain storm — ask me how I know.

There are many guy points as well. There is no vestibule although the company did offer a separate "bag" vestibule. Given the top frame pole, though, I've added sylnylon tarps as small vestibules.

I could go on but really this tent checks a lot of boxes.
