photo: Redd Superfood Energy Bars nutrition bar

A new 10-gram energy bar that includes a host of Superfoods. Also packed with quite an assortment of vitamins and minerals.

Pros

  • 10 grams of protein in a 2-ounce bar
  • Easy to identify the taste
  • Vitamins and minerals
  • 220-230 calories

Cons

  • Very dense

R.E.D.D. or Research Enhanced Design and Development is a relative newcomer to the large field of energy bars. What they have done to separate themselves from that field, is to pack each 56-62 gram bar with superfoods, vitamins, and minerals.

Three flavors are offered: Oatmeal, Peanut Butter, and Chocolate. Each bar supplies 10 grams of protein and 220-230 calories per serving. All three flavors are all-natural, gluten-free, and contain no GMO products, but they do contain nut products, for those who are allergic to be aware of.

The list of superfoods includes quinoa, chia, pumpkin seeds, Yerba Mate, mangosteen, Maca, Goji, Acai, Schizandra, dark chocolate, and cacao. An equally long list of vitamins and minerals provide up to 50% of the recommended daily values.

R.E.D.D. was nice enough to supply me with a variety pack to test. While the bars each have a distinct taste they do share some common traits. Each bar was consumed either before or after a session in my local gym consisting of at least one hour of cardio training.

The Oatmeal bar was chewy and a little sticky with a really mellow oat flavor. I felt this was the sweetest of the three bars and I needed a bit of water while I ate it. The bars are quite dense hence the need for water.

The Chocolate bar I liked a lot because unlike many other brands of chocolate bars the R.E.D.D. bar doesn't turn into a gooey mess when it becomes warm. The chocolate is incorporated into the bar rather than being dipped into it. The taste for me was more of cocoa than chocolate. Again the bar is quite dense.

The Peanut Butter bar had a more delicate taste than I expected. I liked this flavor a lot because it was so subtle. This bar while also dense went down a lot easier than the others.

I felt all three bars supplied me with energy prior to my workouts and did a great job of curbing any hunger pains after my workout. While they were all pretty dense, but the small size made them easy to consume and they were definitely filling considering their size.

I am very interested in taking a number of these on my next long distance backpacking trip to see what the addition of the vitamins and minerals will do to my well being on the trail. I will definitely write a  follow-up to this review at that time.

For anyone who is into health foods, super foods, and nutrition the R.E.D.D. Superfood Energy Bars are worth a try. They are available at the R.E.D.D. website in multi-packs from 3 bars to 36 bars.
