Recent Rope/Cord/Webbing Reviews

Beal Joker 9.1 mm

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Light is right. A very versatile rope. Recently I lost 30 or so pounds, so you may ask, “Why do you care what your rope weighs? Now you can carry more stuff easier.” The answer is, “Because I can.” Would Mallory have worn hobnailed boots and wool if he had been able to wear fleece and nylon? Of course not, light is right. My main workhorse climbing rope is a 10.2mm monster that is fantastic till I need to carry it. I saw that Beal was making a thin rope that works in single, half or twin… Full review

Mammut Infinity 9.5 mm

rated 4.5 of 5 stars An excellent rope for both sport climbing and trad. I bought a 70 m, bi-color (color change at midpoint) for use in El Potrero Chico. The length and color scheme facilitated two combining 100' pitches and efficient rappels off long sport routes. The 9.5 mm diameter is a reasonable compromise of weight and beefiness. The rope handles smoothly without feeling slick. I also used it this fall leading trad in the Gunks. No complaints, and the 70 m length allowed us to sometimes combine what was normally… Full review

New England Ropes / Maxim KM III 3/8"

rated 5 of 5 stars As a person who deals with climbing ropes on a near-daily basis, I find New England Ropes to be the best on the market. The Maxim KM III is an example of a quality, static rope and is my choice in situations that do not warrant a dynamic rope. I have been using New England's dynamic and static ropes for nearly 13 years on the Adventure Challenge Courses I manage. I think they are the best ropes in the industry. I've gone through dozens of ropes and belayed thousands of climbers. I've never had a… Full review

BlueWater Ropes 9.7mm Lightning Pro

rated 5 of 5 stars Feeds great. This rope is a great size for a thinner workhorse option. I use this rope as my go-to option if I can only take one rope with me to the crag. The Lightning Pro feeds great on belay, clips smoothly, and the color definitely pops in pics too, which is a bonus. I have taken some whippers on this rope, and it is elastic enough to give me a soft catch, but durable enough to withstand all the route projecting I use it on.   I climb primarily sport routes in dry climates, and I haven't tested… Full review

Mammut Genesis 8.5 mm

rated 5 of 5 stars Fantastic, lightweight and sturdy double ropes. Unlike others I have seen, these don't tangle or get "ringlets" and after 6 years they're not fuzzy. Very smooth through the belay device, these ropes are great for rappelling and easy retrieval as well as good handling while belaying. Fantastic, lightweight and sturdy double ropes. Unlike others I have seen, these don't tangle or get "ringlets". Very smooth through the belay device, these ropes are great for rappelling and easy retrieval as well as… Full review

BlueWater Ropes Pull Down Cord

rated 5 of 5 stars BlueWater's reputation for quality static lines is maintained with this product. It works as expected and is a good value. This was purchased as a second line for canyoneering. It is light, has a good hand for a static line, and surprisingly unlikely to tangle. It worked flawlessly during an exploratory trip to the Grand Canyon. I am considering buying a second one which I would cut into two equal lengths (to speed up transition time on smaller drops and ascents). Full review

Sterling Rope Fusion Ion2 9.4mm

rated 5 of 5 stars Amazing handling, great for use in the Grigri 2, nicely cushioned falls, and light as can be. I would definitely recommend this rope. Perfect for sport and trad leads. So lightweight — even in the 70m with dry treatment! I also got the bi-weave which makes finding the middle actually possible — visibilty can save lives and help you avoid sticky situations. I would also recommend the Dry treatment. It extends the longevity of your rope. Of course, 70 meter length for versatility. I've used this… Full review

New England Ropes / Maxim Equinox 10.2 mm

rated 4 of 5 stars After a year of weekend climbing I still like this rope. I didn't expect a lot from a rope in this price range, yet I was pleasantly surprised.  The rope, after a year of weekend sport climbing during nice weather, shows very few signs of wear; one broken strand in the whole rope.  I saw a lot of other climbers using this rope right after I bought it so evidently I was not the only one who jumped on the clearance deal at REI. It started out stiff and it has softened up in this time but it will… Full review

Beal Rando 8 mm

rated 3.5 of 5 stars Lightweight rope for non-technical terrain. It's useful for glacier travel or peace of mind when necessary. Has a dry treatment which gives it some water resistance and it's pretty light and compact. Can be found in 20, 30, and 48 m length. It's the kind of rope you use for non-technical terrain or when you are not sure what to expect. Full review
