I bought these boots at Payless Shoe Source, and added some "gel-air" insoles. They are made of waterproof synthetic leather which seems pretty tough, gives good ankle support, and are really waterproof, but breathability is another issue. They breath but not very fast, but I find that a good insole, good combination of socks and foot powder, plus gelling your feet with alcohol before you hike, all work well to reduce moisture and odor.
They are pretty durable (proably not as tough as real leather), but I have never used them in any extreme conditions where tear, puncture, or heat resistance etc. could be determined. With good insoles and socks they are comfortable for a full day's wear and also suitable for backpacking with moderate loads. Be sure to powder them when you take them off! The lug sole has great traction and is also very durable and bonded well too. Definitely a great value for those who do not think you need to be rich to enjoy the outdoors.
