The Astro CD has been discontinued. If you're looking for something new, check out the best three-season tents for 2024.

Version reviewed: 1999

I like the tent for the huge vestibule and space it offers. It comfortably contains two six footers with lots of headroom. The vestibule also stored four backpacks without obstructing the entrance of the tent. We used the main door as a mini-roof (tied the ends to a couple of trees) when we cooked outside in the rain. It's a great group as well as a personal equipment.

However, be sure to choose your camp site and tighten the flysheet well when it rains. There was a storm when we climbed, and there were instances of water condensing in some parts of the tent (especially around the lower portions of the sides). I think this is an area where the model must be improved.

Design: 3 season dome
Sleeps: 2
Ease of Setup: 5 mins.; time spent more on securing fly sheet
Weight: 6 lbs.
Price Paid: about US $300

I have used this tent in all seasons and found it to be extremely rugged. The tent has 31 sq ft of space and the vestibule has a whopping 19 sq ft. Two people can live comfortably with all their gear in the vestibule. The four pole design makes this tent very sturdy for a three-season tent, though it does add weight.

I took it out for a winter weekend and it shed three inches of snow as well as withstood 25 mph winds with no problem. The fly must be staked out well for optimum ventilation and condensation is nominal. An all around great tent and will withstand more than three seasons worth of conditions.

Ease of Setup: It takes a little more time at first but once you've done it a couple of times, it's a breeze
Weight: approx 7 lbs.
Price Paid: $100

Although a bit heavier than most two-person, three-season tents, it more than makes up for it with the cavernous vestibule. It acts as a mudroom, garage, cooking patio, dog house, and storage area and is invaluable on those rainy trips!

Design: Three season frestanding dome
