Recent Soft Shell Jacket Reviews

Sherpa Adventure Gear Shishapangma Jacket

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Lightweight, comfortable, and very stylish. I really like this softshell for spring and fall temps. I really like my Sherpa softshell. It was my first softshell, and it is great for cool weather but doesn't do well when the wind is strong and the temperatures drop below 35°. It is lightweight, stretchy, and looks great. The only real con I have about this jacket is that the zipper gets a stuck at the neckline. Overall I am very happy with it and I'm glad I purchased it. Full review

Outdoor Research Men's Mithril Jacket

rated 4 of 5 stars Very reliable and warm waterproof softshell for cold conditions. Introduction This is a jacket that bridges the gap between softshell and hardshell.  In fact this is a taped seamed hardshell with a fleece lining. This makes it either the most versatile jacket you'll ever own or a jacket that you don't know quite what to do with. Fit & Comfort: Fits small. Comfortable with a base layer but cannot layer anything but a base and insulated vest under this jacket. Material is stiff and binds when… Full review

Marmot Men's Leadville Jacket

rated 4 of 5 stars I haven't worn this out in the mountains yet, so this will be on fit and feel. I'm not familiar with soft shell jackets but I wanted one for the three seasons, wind and light rain. I weigh 160lbs. 5'10" jacket size: Medium I like the fit, the arms are long enough so if I'm stretching for that next hold while climbing my jacket sleeves don't ride up my arm and the torso length of the jacket covers the iliac crest. Full review

Arc'teryx Men's Epsilon LT Hoody

rated 3.5 of 5 stars A very well made piece that never seems ideal for any one task. A good lightweight top layer for cold weather alpine and rock climbing. For a long while I had dreamed of owning an Acto MX, Arc'teryx truly wonderful hard fleece layering jacket. Sadly they discontinued this jacket and replaced it with the Epsilon LT. The idea I had in mind for this jacket was to be used as a weather resistant mid layer. I run very hot, so I like to have a layer piece that can sit under a shell if things get really… Full review

Bergans Women's Torfinnstind Jacket

rated 4.5 of 5 stars The Torfinnstind Jacket is a soft-shell hybrid that provides comfort and stretch while repelling wind and water. Whether hiking, mountain biking, snowshoeing, nordic skiing, alpine skiing, or backcountry ski touring, the Torfinnstind has been my most consistent outdoor adventure companion throughout the fall and winter months this season. This versatility across climate and sport earns it a consistent home in my pack (on the rare occasion in which I’m not already wearing it when I leave the house). Full review

REI Fleece Lined Wind Pro Shell

rated 5 of 5 stars The most wonderful soft shell I have ever owned! Extremely durable and soft. Very comfortable. This is my 'magic' jacket! I have had it for about 12 years, and it's still holding strong! I wear it almost every time I hike, backpack, snowshoe, mountain bike, etc. It's my camp layer on river and camping trips. It layers well with heavier jackets, and is comfortable to sleep in, if needed. I will never find another layer like it, so I hope it lasts forever! I have been more than pleasantly surprised… Full review

Outdoor Research Men's Ferrosi Hoody

rated 5 of 5 stars Hands down my #1 go-to upper layer for 3-season use! Feels like a second natural protective outer skin! So comfortable and flexible, it "becomes you." I have four of these in different colors and REALLY like them. Use on trails, commute to trailhead, out-and-about day off jacket, workday commute jacket. My wife and several members of our hiking clubs are now getting these. Amazing soft shell hoody for aerobic activities. -- Writing and photos underway. Please check back soon! -- More photos coming… Full review

Black Diamond Men's Dawn Patrol Jacket

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Range of motion is excellent as are the size adjustment features. Storage is excellent considering range of motion. Jacket repels water like an allergy and blocks wind like a wall. I bought the BDE dawn patrol over the summer at the BDE Outlet in Salt Lake City for a bargain. The jacket has been worth every penny.  Remarkably waterproof and unfailingly wind proof, the Dawn Patrol is perfect for shoulder season forays into any terrain. Range of motion in the Dawn Patrol means you can stay dry and… Full review

Columbia Women's Sweet As Softshell Hoodie

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Does the job it was designed for — breathable, water resistant. I wanted something to wear while hiking in the rain that wouldn't make me wetter on the inside than out. This jacket has been perfect.   It breathes well and it has kept me dry in the drizzle, moderate rain and snow. Haven't worn it in a monsoon yet. As well I find it does a good job cutting the wind.   It fits very well, very comfortable. I'm 5'9" and a large is perfect. There is room for layering underneath but not too big that… Full review
