Recent Soft Shell Pant Reviews

Outdoor Research Women's Ferrosi Pants

rated 5 of 5 stars My go-to for my first spring hike this season! Wooohooo, it's finally hiking season again! I've owned my OR Ferrosi Pants for a year now, and they have made me a very happy hiker! I can't say enough about OR's Ferrosi material. It's lightweight, breathable, and stretches to allow easy movement on steep hiking terrain. The Ferrosi Pants are a great option for spring hiking as they can be adjusted easily as the temperatures change. I appreciate having the full length of the pant on chilly mornings. Full review

La Sportiva Halo Pant

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Breathable yet warm softshell pant well suited for backcounty skiing, ski touring, snowshoeing, or cold weather hiking. The La Sportiva Halo Pants have been a staple of my backcounty outerwear since receiving them in February. Features Out of the box I was impressed with the overall construction of the Halo pants. The material had an ample amount of stretch and there was a soft lining along the inside that was comfortable against the skin. La Sportiva included 5 pockets; 2 side zip closure, 2 front… Full review

Outdoor Research Men's Ferrosi Pants

rated 5 of 5 stars Excellent lightweight pants. The thinnest softshell pants I have seen, but a much more substantial feel than the wispy ultralight nylon pants. Some people use these over a baselayer in winter as well, as they are water repellent and wind resistant, but I have the Marmot Durango for that. Full review

Marmot Men's Scree Pant

rated 4 of 5 stars These are fairly light so can be used in warmer weather. The factory DWR is very good but I haven't had them long enough to know how long it lasts. Good wind resistance and fast drying. Great in colder weather as they flex over a base layer well. Not insulated at all tho. Oops, I pretty much said it all in the summary. Full review

Patagonia Women's Northwall Pants

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Very comfortable and warm! This pant has made my ice climbing season the BEST due to being warm and comfortable in our cold Midwest weather. Some complaints noted about the loops being off center for holding the bottom cuff in place to act as a gator.  I rectified this by attaching bungy cord to the loops, this acts a gator and allows for easy knee movement. This year did not present me with wet climbing but I waterproofed these pants anyway. Full review

Salomon Women's Momentum II Soft Shell Pant

rated 4.5 of 5 stars The Momentum Soft Shell pant has been my go-to for nordic skiing this season. I bought this pant at the beginning of the season for nordic skiing on groomed trails, but have enjoyed the Momentum in the backcountry as well! The flexible material allows for easy, unrestricted movement, and the fleece insulation is warm yet breathable. It also feels great against your skin.  My favorite feature of this pant is the balance between wind protection and breathability. Climawind material is used only on… Full review

Mountain Hardwear Sarpa Pant

rated 5 of 5 stars My new go-to soft shell pants!!!!Value packed....Perfect stretch and features well thought out. After considering many other brands and styles I decided I would wait for my purchase. As luck would have it I stopped by our new Mountain Hardwear outlet store in Colorado on a whim. I found a pair of Sarpas on sale for 30% off and if I sign up for membership another 10% off, so I paid a whopping $40.76 for them. After wearing them for two outings in snow and 60mph winds I can not express how happy… Full review

Patagonia Men's Knifeblade Pants

rated 5 of 5 stars The Patagonia Knifeblade pants are referred to as filling the gap between traditional softshells and hardshells. However, as with the Knifeblade Jacket, it is more softshell than hardshell — fairly wind-resistant and water repellent in light drizzle, though it wets out and leaks in a heavy shower. It is well-suited to use in dry snow conditions someplace like the higher altitudes in the Andes or Alaska Range, Antarctica, or the light fluffy powder in the Wasatch, Colorado Rockies, or Tetons. But… Full review

Mountain Hardwear Ancona Trek Pant

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Function, good looks and non-bulky. I looked high and low for a non-bulky hiking pant to fit my ample hips and thighs and accommodate my short stature. Pockets are sufficient - fabric is comfortable. Articulated knees and gussets are a big plus.  Makes a great 3 season pant.  Size fits true yet relaxed enough for a long underwear when needed. Water resistant and sun protection. Seems very well made. Got mine through Sierra Trading Post ...sign up for emails and get a great coupon! Full review
