BugBaffler Insect Protective Headnet

rated 5 of 5 stars A no-see-um head net. Many of the woodsy areas around Chicago are restored wetlands which serve as a breeding and feeding habitat for wildlife, including mosquitos. During a four-hour hike I was not bitten once while wearing the head net. Combined with permethrin treated clothes it was a perfect system to thwart massive swarms of mosquitos. The head net fits over my full-brimmed Tilley hat and the elastic arm loops hold it in place. It fits in a pocket and the light weight makes it a no-brainer… Full review

All Terrain Herbal Armor

rated 3.5 of 5 stars This is the only DEET-free bug spray I have found that is effective against the mosquitos and ticks in New England. However, it doesn't work well as you head farther south down the coast. I don't remember exactly when I first discovered Herbal Armor, but it is now the only insect repellant I carry when I'm in New England. It is, however, one of the few pieces of gear that I only carry in certain regions. While it has served me well on hikes throughout New England, it has failed me miserably every… Full review

Sea to Summit Escapist Ultra-Mesh Bug Tent

rated 2 of 5 stars Really wanted to love the large tarp + bug tent combo. Gave it 14 nights on the Tahoe Rim Trail — meadows, ridges, trees, granite, mud, wind, and rain. Sheds water like a duck. However, I'm just 5'1" and was unable to sit up under the head end except on nights where I was able to find a near perfect pitching site and didn't need to pitch low due to wind. In order to achieve full height and width at the head end of the inner tent, the front corners of the tarp have to be pitched high. This combo… Full review

Sea to Summit Escapist Ultra-Mesh Bug Tent

rated 4 of 5 stars A non-free standing shelter by design that works well with a variety of conditions and platforms. It can be pitched with a pair of trekking poles or in between two trees. It's a versatile shelter that can be used as a ground shelter or even as a hammock tarp. Since this is a modular system, the weight can be easily be distributed between two people. Best used for 3-season backpacking and can be used as a solo or 2-person shelter. Manufacturer Specs: http://www.seatosummit.com.au/products/bug-protection/escapist/… Full review

Sawyer Permethrin Premium Insect Repellent

rated 5 of 5 stars Easy to use and long lasting this bug treatment really works. If you visit buggy areas or are concerned about ticks at home or on trail this stuff is peace of mind in a bottle Designed to be used to pretreat clothing and gear to repel ticks, chiggers, mites and mosquitoes this product works as advertised.  After one full season of use I am convinced of the effectiveness of Sawyer's permethrin and will keep using it so long as that remains the fact. Application is simply a matter of waiting for… Full review

UCO Citronella Candles

rated 5 of 5 stars Effective power in a small package! Mini and Micro Candle Lanterns offer 3-4 hours of burn time per candle. Citronella oil is mixed into the paraffin and the scent is released as the candle burns creating a natural insect repellent. This 6-pack of Citronella tealight candles will provide you with approximately 18-24 hours of light. Very effective in keeping insects away from sight for many hours. Full review

BugButton SuperBand

rated 1 of 5 stars Does not work in the least. Went camping and like an idiot I purchased 10 buttons and 8 bracelets instead of spray. Now I am paying the price and lots of itch cream. They don't work at all. I even witnessed mosquitos biting me right beside the buttons and all around the bracelets as well. Lesson learned. Full review

Duration Permethrin

rated 5 of 5 stars No more bugs...No more DEET...just that simple! So Duration is the first product I have given a 5-star review (I even went to the trouble to list it because I'm that impressed!). I try to withhold this rating for products which excel beyond all my expectations...and the Duration permethrin concentrate did just that. Put simply...this product helped me resolve my longstanding battle against insects...and given that I spend nearly my entire summers along rivers and in wetlands...that's high praise! Full review

Repel 100 Pump Spray

rated 3.5 of 5 stars Basic upper tier bug repellant that for a low price and handy size, is a must for anyone not wanting to get too many mosquito bites. I bought the Repel 100% Deet, 14 ml size as a backpacking spray while I was out in heavy mosquito territory. Now I usually wear long pants and shirts, but since it was the middle of summer, I hoped that short sleeves would be alright in usage with this repellant. At 100%, its supposed to be as good as it gets right? To sum it up, it works, but not as well as anticipated. Full review
