Recent Trail Running Shoe Reviews

Brooks Men's Cascadia 9

rated 4 of 5 stars This may be the most comfortable shoe I've ever owned. Great for training, early morning walks, and light day hiking. My feet are notoriously difficult to fit. I have long toes... wide fore-feet (bunions)... narrow heel... no arches... and size 14. These all combine to make shoe purchasing a chore every time. With the Cascadias, I have found the holy grail of training shoes for my feet. Fit is excellent, with lots of room for my toes and bunions, without having my feet slip around in the shoe. Break-in… Full review

La Sportiva Men's Bushido

rated 4 of 5 stars Nimble, light, but robust trail runner. Narrow last, great protection. Fit: This shoe fits narrow. If you have wide feet you can stop reading now. If you have medium to narrow feet this trail runner will give you more support than you are used to. I have narrow feet and it is the first time that my mid foot and heel feel so locked in. There is a TPU frame and mid rock plate that really cups your mid foot and prevents any torsion from happening there. After 50Km I often have issues with the soles… Full review

Mizuno Men's Wave Kazan

rated 4 of 5 stars Solid shoe for running trails. As for any shoe, fit is key. Although I usually run on the roads, I've been running on some (fairly non-technical) trails enough that I decided to get a trail running shoe. I've been using Mizuno Wave Inspires for my running shoe, and the running shoe store suggested that the Wave Kazans would be 'comparable'. (I think they probably just recommended it because it's Mizuno's only trail-running shoe.) Anyway, the shoes have been working fine through about 200 miles of… Full review

Altra Men's Superior

rated 4 of 5 stars This would be a great mid-distance, less aggressive trail shoe for anyone who's into zero drop. The Altra Superior is a relatively slim zero-drop trail shoe. While they do take a beating (aside from the questionable cords on the upper), it provides a lighter and less-cushioned alternative to Atra's other trail line, the Lone Peak. Those of you who are looking for more toe room and a bit more protection than barefoot shoes should give the Superior serious consideration. For being a shaved down… Full review

Altra Men's Lone Peak 1.5

rated 4 of 5 stars Very comfortable zero drop trail shoe with some cushion. Well, my first Altra trail shoe was the original Lone Peak, so it seemed when the 1.5 came out, I had to have them. I was a little put off by the color and surprised to see that the heel had been made stiff with added support. They fit very snug and very comfortable. They really lock right on to the foot for a solid fit. I'd say they fit well like any other Altra shoe. The shoe has handled a lot of different terrain and has also been beat… Full review

Altra Men's Lone Peak 2.0

rated 4 of 5 stars If you're looking for a zero drop, distance trail shoe, this is it! This shoe has been a great long distance trail shoe for me. First stepping into them, the 26mm of stack height caught me off guard. It's only 3mm taller than the 1.5 and a few more mm taller than the Superior. Very noticeable and I thought I was on stilts. But that cushion really helped on a recent 50K win. The legs and joints didn't feel any noticable aches or pains that I'd normally have over long distances. Traction is also… Full review

Salomon Men's Sense Mantra

rated 4.5 of 5 stars I like this shoe a lot. It has great feel on the foot and feels so light compared to other trail runners I have used in the past. Fit/Comfort: Very comfortable tight foot. I have a wider foot and had concerns about buying online. Through several runs I am very impressed with how the shoe fits and feels. It is extremely comfortable. I hate putting on my everyday shoes now. I want to wear my Salomons all the time! Support: Arches feel decent, somewhat lacking for my liking. This isn't a big deal though… Full review

Teva Men's X-1 Control 2

rated 4 of 5 stars Great shoe for all mountain activity. Holds up to things that it wasn't really designed for: day hiking, mountain bike riding, rock climbing. Too bad they are gone. I hope someone else had a good experience with this outstanding shoe. It's a shame that this is discontinued. I have a pair that I bought for mountain biking. Yep, Crazy. But they work great for cross-country style riding. I have hiked with them on too. One thing I haven't done is run in them. I really can't say how well they would work… Full review

Salomon Men's XA Pro 3D

rated 4.5 of 5 stars These are my now go-to hiking and backpacking shoes that replaced my boots. It's also nice that they double as trail running shoes as needed. These are perfect for someone who wants to move fast on the trail but still wants the ankle support of a boot. I'd definitely recommend these if you are looking for a light fast and grippy shoe for all kinds of terrain. Just took these shoes on a cross-country backpacking trip, everything from climbing up and down talus, hike on unkept trails, through meadows,… Full review
