Recent Trail Running Shoe Reviews

Hoka challenger ATR2

rated 5 of 5 stars The shoe is more comfortable than the ATR3s. Excellent cushioning especially for someone like me with Plantar Fasciitis. Enough room for good but not excessive toe splay and the mid foot and heel are snug enough to keep the foot snug and locked in. Initially, I had a weird sense of being to high up, but as I used the shoe more, my feet settled in nicely to the cushioning. I have several trail runners and it seems that I use this shoe more than the others. Good transition shoe too. I have plantar… Full review

Brooks Men's Cascadia 11

rated 5 of 5 stars These shoes serve as my day hikers and trainers. Great stability and traction with solid support. The fit is true to size and they are narrow in the heel, which is perfect for my foot. I run mountain trails to stay in hiking shape and was looking for a trail shoe with support and durability. I am very pleased with the narrow fit which prevents the shoe from slipping on my heels. The shoe is durably built and very stable on the trail which was key in my purchase decision.   The support may be part… Full review

Salomon Men's Speedcross 4

rated 5 of 5 stars Light, tough, comfortable. I have put over 500 miles on these in technical mountain terrain. Would not trade them for the world, except for a new pair. Full review

Altra Women's Lone Peak 3.0

rated 5 of 5 stars My go-to trail running and hiking shoe. The Birkenstocks of trail running shoes. Incredible comfort due to the wide toe box, low drop, flexibility and cushioning. I have used in many conditions except for mud. An almost perfect running shoe no matter how far you run. Great for hiking too as I've taken them out several times for five mile hikes and great for trail running no matter how far you run. I have used in many conditions except mud (SoCAL you know) and they perform well in all of these conditions. Full review

New Balance Men's 910v2

rated 5 of 5 stars Been wearing New Balance my whole life for road running and when I switched to trail running the 910v2 didn't disappoint. I've been using New Balance shoes my whole life for either running or walking, particularly because of the wide toe boxes their shoes have. So when I started trail running and hiking, it was a natural choice to go to a New Balance shoe, and they didn't disappoint. My local running store sold them to me at a discounted price of $50 and it has turned out these are a boon. Great… Full review

La Sportiva Men's Wildcat

rated 4.5 of 5 stars A lightweight comfortable shoe that can be used for long or short term hiking with a backpack. Feels a lot lighter than it is. The outsoles are amazing particularly on downhills. The shoe could be more stable laterally as I think the last could be wider. When I got these shoes I was looking for something that could be used for more than a trail runner. Regular hiking shoe are too bulky and stiff for my taste. This shoe hit the mark and is versatile for both its use as a trail runner and hiking shoe. Full review

Adidas Men's Response Boost

rated 5 of 5 stars The shoe is so light and comfortable it is like you aren't wearing a shoe. I like the sock-like upper which holds your feet in securely and gives a very stable feel. The continental outsole has excellent grip and the lugs are long enough so that the shoe is versatile and can be used on various types of trails. What amazed me about this shoe is its fit and that when wearing it, it doesn't feel like you are wearing a shoe. That is due to the sock-like upper. The lacing system locks in your feet and… Full review

Saucony Men's Xodus ISO

rated 5 of 5 stars The shoe is extremely comfortable and great on rocky (scree) trails because it has one of the stickiest outsoles I have experienced. The toe box is roomy, but the shoe is not sloppy because of the narrow mid foot and heel counter. I have plantar fasciitis and wouldn't know it while wearing this shoe. Nice advancement over the Xodus 6.0, although I miss that shoe as a hiking shoe. The shoe is very comfortable and plush inside. Great cushioning protects feet over rocky surfaces, particularly scree,… Full review

Altra Women's Lone Peak 3.0

rated 4 of 5 stars The Altra Lone Peak 3.0 is a trail shoe designed for a woman's foot and I recommend it for anyone looking for a wide, comfortable toe box and a lightweight shoe for hiking or backpacking. I’ve been alternating between boots and the Altra Lone Peak 3.0 trail shoes all winter. The backpacking debate rages on—trail runners versus boots. I’ve tried trail runners before and didn’t find them to be stable enough on uneven surfaces. Many people hiking the John Muir Trail rave about Altras so I decided… Full review
