Recent Trail Running Shoe Reviews

La Sportiva Men's Wildcat

rated 4 of 5 stars A sturdy trail runner fit for lightweight backpacking. The outsole on this shoe is the best thing since the old Vibram soles on my heavy full-leather boots. They stick to every condition I've encountered on the Appalachian Trail (except for mossy wet rock, but everyone is going to break their neck on that stuff). Lightweight and breathable. If the shoe fits, wear it! After 15 years backpacking in heavy, full leather, boots, I finally decided to give a trail runner a try. I wish I had switched sooner. Full review

Adidas Women's Terrex Swift R GTX

rated 5 of 5 stars Feet stayed dry! Stomping through puddles and mud and snow, socks dry as a bone! I am wowed by these trail shoes in more ways than one. Adidas shoes in very bright turquoise and yellowFeet dry and surprisingly warm! I actually bought these shoes when I traded in my Merrell All out Blaze hiking shoes after 6 months. It was a day before a 4-night trip out in the Olympics. I needed a shoe, any shoe at that point because my arches were aching so badly from the Merrells. I spotted these and tried a… Full review

Inov-8 X-Talon 212

rated 5 of 5 stars My favorite trail running shoes. Also moonlight as my favorite grass volleyball shoes! Lightweight, great balance between proper foot bottom protection and feel, amazing traction. To top it off, they look good and are built to last. Inov-8 makes the best trail running shoes. Also make great fitness shoes, but this review is on the X-Talon 212. Always a great combination of feel and protection. Basically, enough so that you have a good tactile feel of what you're running on so that you can stay balanced,… Full review

Saucony Women's Peregrine 3

rated 5 of 5 stars The Saucony Peregrine 3 is the best trail shoe I've worn in 15 years! They have plenty of room in the toe box yet stay snug in the heel area. Their tread is tough enough for rocky trails, yet forgiving enough that I can also handle some stretches of pavement during runs. The traction is excellent — even in muddy areas. I wore these on a 10-mile trail run the first time out of the box and they felt great. There is plenty of arch support with comfortable cushion as well. The shoe is not designed… Full review

Saucony Women's Grid Excursion TR 2

rated 1.5 of 5 stars I am a nurse in the hospital doing 12-hour shifts. I was looking for a shoe to sometimes work in and take walks in. The shoe is lacking in the center, also it leans to the sides. Very uncomfortable. Only had 2 months, not satisfied. lLeans to the side, not enough support in the center of shoe. Full review

Salomon Men's XT Wings 3

rated 5 of 5 stars Highly structured stability trail runners with bombproof durability, good grip, and comfort. I'm on my 4th pair of this shoe, which was called the XT Wings. Fit: Salomon tends to run narrow but this fits reasonably true to my medium wide foot. The toebox is pleasingly wide and the heel cup is narrow, which I love. Comfort: Runs firm compared to most road shoes. I run on the road without issues. Close fit, helped by great speed laces. Not comfortable at all without socks. Support: Fantastic — this… Full review

Pearl Izumi Men's EM Trail M2

rated 3.5 of 5 stars A very comfortable trail runner. Suitable for most off road running, but really shines on gravel road and softer trails. Great for a beginner looking for a cushy ride. Shoe runs a little small so sizing up isn't a bad idea (especially when it keeps your toes from hitting the box on downhills!). Almost a sock-like feel due to upper construction.  Very comfortable trail running shoe right out of the box, pretty much zero break-in time. Did get rocks and other debris in shoe, but it's a tradeoff from… Full review

Inov-8 Men's F-Lite 195

rated 5 of 5 stars Great for fitness workouts, weightlifting, and good for running. Very comfortable pair of shoes, and extremely light (6.9 oz). It feels like you are training barefoot. Great stability for lifting weights. Full review

Mizuno Men's Wave Hitogami 2

rated 3.5 of 5 stars Light, responsive racing/fast training shoe with good transition. 9mm offset doesn't seem that high. Well designed and crafted with attention to detail and an upper, especially in the black/red color combo, that is a work of art. This is the most beautiful and artistic shoe from Mizuno since the late and lamented Wave Evo series. The upper is an absolute work of art, especially in the black/red color combo.   Same excellent performance as in the first Hitogami, with changes mainly in the upper… Full review
