Recent Trail Running Shoe Reviews

Saucony Men's ProGrid Outlaw

rated 5 of 5 stars Great for gnarly terrain runs, will protect your feet. Lightweight and quick to dry; keeps everything out of your shoe. I have a couple Bear Mountain 50-mile trail runs on these shoes and can't recommend them enough. Great ankle support for the gnarly root and rocks you will run into and plenty of protection underneath the impact area. Lightweight and quick to dry (throw in some quick-dry socks to ensure this) when your run takes you across water hazards. Fit: I typically run in minimalist shoes… Full review

Asics Gel-Arctic 4 GTX

rated 5 of 5 stars A durable and comfortable studded shoe for running on hard packed snow and not-too-steep ice. The studs are replaceable to extend the useful life of the shoe. It's not often that I give a 5-star review, but these shoes are doing what they are supposed to do and holding up so well that it's really hard to fault them on anything. They don't seem to be sold in the U.S., but they (or maybe newer variants) are still widely available in Norway. I got mine about two years ago have tried to keep them on… Full review

Merrell Men's All Out Crush

rated 3.5 of 5 stars This is a lightweight purpose-built trail running shoe. Good grip on wet and dry trails. The Merrell All Out Crush is a purpose built trail runner for anyone with a medium foot width. Weighing just 8 ounces per shoe you hardly feel like you are wearing a shoe at all. The soles feature Merrell's M select grip which has performed well in wet and dry trail conditions. The 5mm lugged soles are close enough together for good traction while being far enough apart that they don't load up with mud. I found… Full review

Inov-8 Roclite 243

rated 4.5 of 5 stars For what it's intended for it is a very high quality trail runner. This shoe is best for short to medium trail runs on loose dirt.  The grip is fantastic. The shoe is very lightweight, the construction is great, ventilation is good.  The only problem for me is that it would not be useful for hikes or any crossover purpose (except perhaps as an approach shoe for taking on climbing routes). The flexibility would mean that you feel small rocks, but my foot has all the freedom to move naturally.  Full review

La Sportiva Women's Ultra Raptor GTX

rated 4.5 of 5 stars These shoes are great for trail running and hiking in rocky areas. They are by far the grippiest shoes I have worn, and they seem to have good support in the soles to absorb impact on your feet too. Very comfortable. This shoe fits perfectly for me. I don't have the pickiest taste, but I prefer breathing room and wider fitting shoes. They have a bulkier/ heavier feel to them, which is good for support, maybe not so good if you are trying to go ultralight. The sole support is thick and provides impact… Full review

Icebug Men's Zeal RB9X

rated 4 of 5 stars Lightweight trail running shoe that also works well as a hiking shoe. Excellent traction, especially in wet conditions. The Zeal RB9X trail running shoe by Swedish company Icebug continues their tradition of offering shoes with some of the best traction around. While I am not a trail runner I do prefer that style of shoe for both my hiking and backpacking footwear. I was lucky enough to be offered a pair of the Zeal runners in May for extensive testing. The Zeals come in one color, grey with orange… Full review

New Balance Leadville v3

rated 3.5 of 5 stars This is a good very lightweight trail running and light backpacking shoe and I would recommend this shoe to people looking to lighten up their backpacking footwear. I am 58 years old and recently retired and have been trying to get out more with the intentions of doing some longer thru hikes and was looking for wide trail shoes to use in place of my existing hiking boots and New Balance cross trainers have been my go-to shoe (for me and about a million or so other older people...), so I decided… Full review

Skechers Men's GOtrail Ultra 3

rated 4.5 of 5 stars A very lightweight, super cushioned trail running shoe. Offers excellent stability and traction. Fully drainable through midsole side ports. I have been a big fan of Skechers sneakers for years because they have a fairly wide toe box which works well for my feet. I am one of a growing trend of hikers and backpackers who like to use lightweight trail running shoes when we venture out onto the trail. I had used a pair of Skechers GOrun marathon trainers for my hike of the John Muir trail in 2014 and… Full review

Altra Men's Superior 2.0

rated 2.5 of 5 stars One of the most comfortable shoes I have owned, but not for long. I record my runs with a GPS watch and have put about 135 km on these shoes, mostly on trail. I bough them in my usual size 46, but the fit is a bit loose, especially in the heel (tried on the 45s but they seemed a little short). I was looking for something with a little more padding than the "barefoot" shoes I have been running in for the last 5.5 years, but still with zero drop and some trail feel. These seemed to fit the bill. They… Full review
