Recent Trail Running Shoe Reviews

The North Face Men's Ultra 109 GTX

rated 5 of 5 stars This trail shoe is all about comfort and fit. A technically sound shoe. After 15 plus years of amateur trail running this shoe is finally "the one." This is the first and only trail shoe I have used where my feet did not hurt after a run. I have been wearing Cascadia for a few years and I just thought everything was supposed to hurt as I "matured".  I am 6' and 210, 59 yrs old. I happened across these in a web search so I decided to give them a spin. I wear 11.5D dress shoe and I sized up to 12.5. Full review

Vibram Women's FiveFingers TrekSport

rated 5 of 5 stars I have been wearing these for years. I'm on my sixth pair. The TrekSport is great for hiking. These have been great for my feet. Every other shoe I have owned has been uncomfortable. I have weird feet- shaped strange and super wide. I love these because they fit to the shape of my feet. Full review

Hoka Women's Mafate Speed

rated 5 of 5 stars These shoes have weird sizing. I had to go down a full size for the right fit. Other than that, they are great! These are the most comfortable shoes I've ever had with lots of room for orthotics. The huge sole looks strange but is really cushion-y and grippy. They work really well in rough terrain over roots and rocks. Full review

Salomon Men's XA Pro 3D

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Planning to hike the AT for two months this fall. Needed a lightweight and breathable shoe that is waterproof. This shoe fits those requirements. Love the comfort while hiking. Purchased these for fall hiking on the AT. They are waterproof and breathable. I'll be on the trail in September and needed a shoe that can help manage the heat my feet will generate. Easy to lace and lightweight. Runs small. I ordered one size larger and they fit perfectly. Full review

La Sportiva Men's Crossover 2.0 GTX

rated 4.5 of 5 stars I really like the lightweight protection of the Crossover 2.0. I have used these shoes for trail running and fast packing, and they have kept me on my feet over some pretty gnarly trails. They have also done a great job of keeping my feet dry. Upper: The upper on the Crossover 2.0 is a thing of beauty. Starting at the top, the flexible GTX liner looks like snakeskin, and wraps the foot and ankle very comfortably. The zipper is anatomically lined, and doesn’t just split the shoe in half, which… Full review

La Sportiva Men's Mutant

rated 4.5 of 5 stars The La Sportiva Mutant is an incredible shoe for running fast in the mountains, fastpacking, and skyracing. The innovative lacing system and upper take a minute to dial in, but wrap the foot nicely and provide a ton of security. The outsole is a sticky claw that shreds any trail you plan to cover. Upper: To start, this shoe is beautiful to look at. Like most La Sportiva products, this shoe just looks fast and aggressive. The black, yellow, and red work perfectly together to make for what I find… Full review

Salomon Men's XA Pro 3D

rated 4.5 of 5 stars The Salomon XA Pro is a great shoe for lightweight hiking and backpacking. This shoe provides stability, durability, protection, and comfort. I've gone through three pairs of these shoes, and most recently wore a pair that held up beautifully on a thru-hike of the John Muir Trial. Upper: The majority of the upper on the XA Pro 3D remains unchanged from the 3D Ultra. This is not a lightweight shoe when compared to most trail runners, but compared to hiking shoes and boots, they’re pretty light. Full review

Altra Men's Lone Peak 2.5

rated 4.5 of 5 stars I had a few requirements for a light hiking shoe: 1. Wide toe box. 2. Minimal Drop 3. Lightweight. These were the perfect fit for all of these, and I highly, highly recommend them! I had a few requirements for a light hiking shoe: 1. Wide toe box. 2. Minimal Drop 3. Lightweight. I tried on some other hikers like La Sportiva Bushidos and Helios, but they were just too narrow. I like a wide toe box. I found the Altra Lone Peak 2.5 and it has a really, really nice toe box that lets your toes spread… Full review

Patagonia Women's EVERlong

rated 4 of 5 stars The EVERlong is a lightweight, fast-drying shoe that makes you forget that you're wearing shoes. I've been wearing my EVERlongs for almost a year now, required zero break-in, and they're still my favorite and most comfortable pair of shoes. I was sad to hear that this model is being discontinued. I have had zero blisters or rub points, even after continuing to hike after river crossings. Uphill or descents both felt the same, unlike with other shoes I've worn that pinched on ascents or let my toes… Full review
