Recent Trail Running Shoe Reviews

Inov-8 Roclite 243

rated 4.5 of 5 stars For what it's intended for it is a very high quality trail runner. This shoe is best for short to medium trail runs on loose dirt.  The grip is fantastic. The shoe is very lightweight, the construction is great, ventilation is good.  The only problem for me is that it would not be useful for hikes or any crossover purpose (except perhaps as an approach shoe for taking on climbing routes). The flexibility would mean that you feel small rocks, but my foot has all the freedom to move naturally.  Full review

La Sportiva Women's Ultra Raptor GTX

rated 4.5 of 5 stars These shoes are great for trail running and hiking in rocky areas. They are by far the grippiest shoes I have worn, and they seem to have good support in the soles to absorb impact on your feet too. Very comfortable. This shoe fits perfectly for me. I don't have the pickiest taste, but I prefer breathing room and wider fitting shoes. They have a bulkier/ heavier feel to them, which is good for support, maybe not so good if you are trying to go ultralight. The sole support is thick and provides impact… Full review

Icebug Men's Zeal RB9X

rated 4 of 5 stars Lightweight trail running shoe that also works well as a hiking shoe. Excellent traction, especially in wet conditions. The Zeal RB9X trail running shoe by Swedish company Icebug continues their tradition of offering shoes with some of the best traction around. While I am not a trail runner I do prefer that style of shoe for both my hiking and backpacking footwear. I was lucky enough to be offered a pair of the Zeal runners in May for extensive testing. The Zeals come in one color, grey with orange… Full review

New Balance Leadville v3

rated 3.5 of 5 stars This is a good very lightweight trail running and light backpacking shoe and I would recommend this shoe to people looking to lighten up their backpacking footwear. I am 58 years old and recently retired and have been trying to get out more with the intentions of doing some longer thru hikes and was looking for wide trail shoes to use in place of my existing hiking boots and New Balance cross trainers have been my go-to shoe (for me and about a million or so other older people...), so I decided… Full review

Skechers Men's GOtrail Ultra 3

rated 4.5 of 5 stars A very lightweight, super cushioned trail running shoe. Offers excellent stability and traction. Fully drainable through midsole side ports. I have been a big fan of Skechers sneakers for years because they have a fairly wide toe box which works well for my feet. I am one of a growing trend of hikers and backpackers who like to use lightweight trail running shoes when we venture out onto the trail. I had used a pair of Skechers GOrun marathon trainers for my hike of the John Muir trail in 2014 and… Full review

Altra Men's Superior 2.0

rated 2.5 of 5 stars One of the most comfortable shoes I have owned, but not for long. I record my runs with a GPS watch and have put about 135 km on these shoes, mostly on trail. I bough them in my usual size 46, but the fit is a bit loose, especially in the heel (tried on the 45s but they seemed a little short). I was looking for something with a little more padding than the "barefoot" shoes I have been running in for the last 5.5 years, but still with zero drop and some trail feel. These seemed to fit the bill. They… Full review

Altra Women's Superior 2.0

rated 4 of 5 stars Great all-around trail shoes with comfortable fit and good trail feel. Unfortunately, they wear out too quickly. Intro/background: Altra gave these shoes to everyone who participated in Oslo Ecotrail in May 2016. Since May, I have run and hiked approximately 360 kilometers/220 miles in these shoes across a wide variety of terrain, and I feel like I have put them through their paces. Some of the big days in these shoes include a hard training weekend in loose, rocky terrain of Rondane National Park in… Full review

Vibram Women's FiveFingers KSO

rated 4 of 5 stars I have been wearing my Vibrams for four years. I can hike a mile upriver on a wooded trail then float down through class 1/2 rapids. They form to your feet making it safer to climb on rocks which can be slimey and slippery. You could jog or run in them, but it is painful on the feet when there are rocks, ie gravel roads. I bought this product four years ago and still wear them whenever I go kayaking or for a float down the river at our house, basically any water sport where you don't want your feet… Full review

Kalenji Kiprace Trail 3

rated 3.5 of 5 stars Great trail running shoe available mostly in Europe and UK. For its price it is superbly technical, grippy, and comfortable, accessible easily to the grand public.   INTRO I purchased the Kiprace Trail 3 about two months ago for training purposes. I am a quite efficient runner  and like low profile shoes. For instance my forever favorite for years now is the X-Talon 212 from Inov 8, but I like all kind of track and cross country spikes too and training in them is just a fun time for me. I have… Full review
