Vango Hurricane 300

photo: Vango Hurricane 300 four-season tent

I wanted a tent for myself and two sons, so hunted and came across the Hurricane, though after hunting the net found zero reviews, so opted instead for Vango's Spirit 300 which was returned due to its fly (man talk about thin!! Give Vango their due however; I emailed them and in three days got a reply answering my fears on the Spirit so, well done guys). Anyway I thought what the hell let's get what I've had my eye on since I got a reply off Vango (if I hadn't na wouldn't of bought again), and go for the Hurricane 300.

Well so far after four trips in various weather (torrential rain, cold etc) from April to September this year it's done proud. Its set up is simple and with it being a full geo it's simple to arrange to the correct spot before pegging.

It's roomy inside too, with ample pockets and with twin vestibules is ideal for cooling during the day when it's hot or opening them at night and just having the no-see-um's closed, or throwing all gear in one and using the other for exit entry and cooking.

My two gripes? it did condense a good bit in July! We woke to find damp spots inside the groundsheet! In cooler weather since, I find this hasn't occured. My second gripe is this beast is heavy and bulky!!

But overall I'm happy with this tent. I wanted a good solid 4-season tent for myself and boys to keep us safe in bad foul weather (recall the days when we where young and used a Bivi? yeah great, eh? well those days a long time ago for me) and so far it's lived up to expectations (can't wait to test it out end of October this year).

Next tent for when I take only one son with me I guess after reading this site will be the Vango Storm 200.

Hope this review helps.

Design: 4 season, free standing full geodesic design
Sleeps: 3
Ease of Setup: doddle
Weight: 4.8
Price Paid: $230

An extremely capable mountain tent which is neither too heavy to be carried fairly comfortably by one person nor too small to accommodate three people with gear.

Pros

  • Price — it is not very expensive
  • Performance — copes well with rain and wind

Cons

  • Condensation — inside of fly can get wet

I've owned this tent for about four years now and used it to camp in UK mountain environments up to 3,000 feet at all times of the year. Although on the heavy side, it has the advantages of being durable, reasonably quick to pitch, roomy (great for two big blokes and all their gear) and weatherproof.

Only problems are its footprint (it's a big tent and so it can be difficult to find level sites in rocky mountain corries) and you wouldn't want to abuse the groundsheet too much on really boggy ground or sharp gravel.

Source: bought it new
Price Paid: Can't remember - about £200

Seems to be a well put together tent, decently manufactured product that could take many years use. However, it is not a brilliantly designed tent. The poles hardly fit through the pole sleeves, which makes putting it up a bit irritating, but taking it down is a nightmare trying to remove the poles.

Outer porch doors are very small and because of this, the zips are made to go around an incredibly tight corner at the top, so it becomes very difficult to undo the doors fully to get in.

The space inside is just about enough for three men, can't complain on that front. Nifty little loft space mesh net but the mesh storage pockets on the side have a depth that make them pretty much a token offering.

Good porch size at the front and rear. Fairly heavy for a 3 man tent.

Could definitely get better for the price.

Price Paid: £215

Had this tent for few months, 5 outings lasting couple of days each. have to say very impressed so far, had tons of rain, no leaks, no condensation.

I also purchased the footprint ground sheet. I think this is essential as fly sheet is thin! It is a bit weighty but it's a three-man tent if 3 people carrying then it's not.

Design: 4-season mountain tent
Sleeps: 3
Ease of Setup: piece off p**** even when drunk lol
Weight: 4lb
Price Paid: £180
