Vortex 7000

rated 5 of 5 stars

The 7000 has been discontinued. If you're looking for something new, check out the best expedition packs for 2024.

Technically, I have a 6800 model, which Vortex made available to me when I described my needs to them. Evidently, they make this pack on a contract basis for an outdoor organization. I was in need of a monster pack with extreme durability, and my pack absolutely delivers in these respects. At 7000 (6800) cubic inches, this pack is one of the largest on the market, and certainly up to the task of long distance trekking, winter trekking, or expedition style outings where huge capacity is key.

It isn't the lightest pack on the market, but it's certainly not meant to be, i.e. it will swallow more gear than you can carry, period. Furthermore, the robustness of my Vortex pack is outstanding, especially in this day and age where most outdoor gear wouldn't last a week of hardcore use. It has survived significant punishment with little sign of wear.

On a 3-week trek, the pack began at over 90 pounds and ended at about 60. The Vortex was up to the task; at no point was I concerned with the durability or the comfort of the pack. Your feet will be begging for mercy long before your back. You're a better hiker than I if you can make double-digit miles every day with 90 pounds!

Bottom line: A huge, well-made expedition pack with notable simplicity, attention to detail, and confidence-inspiring durability.

Vortex is a Salt Lake City, Utah, based company, and their packs are the best and most comfortable I've even seen. All stitching is done with kevlar, and it's also ALL double stitched. The hip belt has curves in it, as to not rub against your hip bone. The back is contoured to your back, and fits like a glove. They measure you, and built the pack specifically to fit your body - no assembly line here. And any repairs that EVER need to be made to it, are done free of charge - WHETHER YOUR FAULT OR THE FAULT OF THE MANUFACTURER. How incredible. A company that finally deserves a top rank! I'm so pleased with them. If you have any questions, e-mail me, and I'll try to help you.
