Platypus GravityWorks Filter System 4L

rated 5 of 5 stars Excellent filter, works fast. I have always purchased Cascade Designs (which Platypus is a part of) products whenever I can because of the excellent customer service and excellent products. They won't be the cheapest product around, but I have an MSR WhispeLite stove, BaseCamp pad, Vela HD quilt, and Platypus water filter. When I got this filter from Amazon it was missing the proprietary connection to one of the bags. I called Platypus on a Saturday and a very helpful (English speaking) person… Full review

Katadyn Hiker PRO

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Easy to use water filter for backpacking. Have owned and used since 2013. Love this filter. Very easy to use, especially when utilizing quick-connects for water bladders. Take very little time to set up and filter. There are several options available (pens, gravity bags, etc), but this has always worked well for me. Very user friendly. My one recommendation and caution is removing and effectively cleaning/drying the filter inside the unit after use. I didn't do this once and got a moldy filter. Full review

Katadyn Hiker PRO

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Just bought this as a primary water filtration system. Used it last weekend as we were camping/hiking Jones Mtn in the Shenandoah. The spring was located right by the cabin we rented. Now I wanted this for the easy pump (47 pumps = 1 liter) and that was indeed easy—NO STRUGGLE or EFFORT needed to accomplish this. And if memory serves it was about 47 pumps. Lightweight for its size. Separate stowage bag and also one of the ziplock "sandwich" type bag for the dirty (OR CLEAN, depending on what you… Full review

Katadyn Hiker PRO

rated 4 of 5 stars It's great for filtering (not purifying) water and at a reasonable price. I have two of these. My first one, PUR brand I got around 1993 and used it for years in the Olympic mountains in Washington. In 2000, I used it when I re-walked Colin Fletcher's 1000 mile summer through California. That state had some funky water... and after seven years and gallons of water it gave up the ghost in Bridgeport, BUT.... The PUR CS people were GREAT. I told them they I was in the middle of the hike and they rushed… Full review

Katadyn Hiker PRO

rated 5 of 5 stars It's hard to look at water filtration as anything but a chore. At least it can be less of one. There will be advocates that stump for total protection, who want a purifier. There will be those who do nothing at all and drink the water straight. Since I personally know more than 30 people who've had confirmed giardia cases that were actually a result of wilderness water sources, I have a few different kinds of filter for different kinds of trips. When taking a group and sharing my filter, I bring… Full review

Katadyn Vario Microfilter

rated 5 of 5 stars A great filter for filtering water for groups of people or for just getting out large volumes of filtered water fast. I've put a countless amount of gallons through this filter and have seen no drop in performance so far. To put an approx. number, I've probably put at least 100 Liters through this thing and no problems of failures have occurred so far. Couldn't be more happy with a filter like this. I use my filter on longer life most of the time, I don't see a true need to get water out as fast… Full review

Katadyn Combi

rated 5 of 5 stars Great working, long lasting, but heavy. This thing is rated for 50,000l like wow. It is smooth and sort of one piece with the hose detached. In my opinion it makes it unlikely to break. I've had this for like 15 years. It has been used thousands of times, all over the place, in all climates. With the charcoal full the water tastes fresh and crisp like bottled water from the store. Charcoal takes out pesticides as well.  It is heavy compared to tablets and other smaller ultralight filters. We will… Full review

LifeStraw Mission Gravity Water Purifier

rated 1 of 5 stars The Lifestraw Mission gravity purifier is overall an OK performing filter, and I would probably trust it to adequately filter any water source not contaminated with chemical contaminants, radioactive material, etc. However, it is not without its flaws and quirks. Filter functionality alone, I would rate this filter 2 or 2 1/2 stars, but when its other flaws are taken into account it brings my rating of this filter down even lower. If someone asked me to describe the Lifestraw Mission in as few words… Full review

Platypus GravityWorks Filter System 4L

rated 5 of 5 stars Lazy Man's Water Tanker! In planning for a 4-day backpacking trip on the Ouachita Trail in Arkansas we noticed a 10-mile stretch with no water supply (with a mountain climb). Looking around this system seemed like it might be the ticket—4 liters, let gravity do the work instead of pumping. Needless to say the morning we hit the trailhead it was snowing with ambient temp of 15°F. The high that day was 22°F. I took the filter from the system and put it inside my shell to make sure it didn't get… Full review
