Black Diamond Alpine Start Hoody

rated 4 of 5 stars A nice balance of breathability, wind resistance and precip resistance — more durable than your average windshirt (but heavier too). This isn't your average ultralightweight windshirt, for one it comes in at 8.2 oz in XL, about double what my other (Patagonia Houdini) windshirt is. But there are some advantages.   The Schoeller material has a nice stretch to it and is definitely going to be more durable than any of the real lightweight windshirts. It strikes a nice balance of wind resistance,… Full review

RailRiders WeatherTop

rated 5 of 5 stars A highly durable, comfortable, pullover that does not restrict arm movements. I wore this piece every day for a 7-day fly fishing excursion in the Amur River Basin of the Khentii Province in Mongolia. It was great in the mid-October cold weather and wind of the Mongolian Steppe and Mongolia Siberia where we ended up. We were fly fishing with large rods and heavy streamers which requires high arm motion double haul casting. The casting motion never felt restricted and kept me comfortable and protected… Full review

RailRiders WeatherTop

rated 4 of 5 stars This is my preferred outer layer for shoulder season mountain biking. It cuts the wind when I need it to and vents when I want it to. I am never worried about abusing it hitting branches because it's so burly, yet it is light enough that I'm not bothered while wearing it. I love this jacket. I'm a hardcore proponent of windshirts as a layer of just about any system and this is a valuable one in my quiver any time I am doing something that mind find me scraping against branches or other abrasive… Full review

RailRiders WeatherTop

rated 4.5 of 5 stars I primarily use this for backcountry skiing. It is great for those early and late season days when it's way too warm to wear your winter coat. This is a remake of an old RailRiders layer brought back with some new improvements. It's a very unique piece, a soft-shell-ish pullover that does a decent job of keeping out water and an excellent job of keeping out wind. I got one for christmas last year and used it sporadically for the rest of the winter. The best use I found for this top is backcountry… Full review

Mammut Prussic Jacket

rated 4.5 of 5 stars A super light wind jacket, that packs so small and light, you'll never need to leave it at home. The jacket has been discontinued, but an updated version is available... the Mammut MTR 201 Micro Jacket. Had been looking to upgrade my 12-year-old Patagonia Helium windshirt, with something lighter and more packable. Had looked a several, and was trying to make a decision, when I ran across some of these on a clearance rack at my local REI store. After looking at it, and trying it on, I was seduced… Full review

MontBell Tachyon Anorak

rated 4 of 5 stars Ultra light wind shirt, great protection, folds up tiny, not superb on breathability. Construction: I can be short with this review — The Tachyon anorak is one of the lightest, if not the lightest, wind shirts on the market. A size Large weighs in at 69 grams.  It folds up the size of a kiwi.  The (very) thin ballistic nylon the Tachyon is made of is very strong. I have worn this for two years, weekly. Not a rip or frayed piece of fabric. Only some discolouration from dirt etc. A friend of… Full review

The North Face Men's Verto Jacket

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Surprisingly breathable, durable, water resistant jacket. Have had this piece for a season now and I am thoroughly impressed. It is much more breathable and water resistant than expected. Even held off water in the shower test (other than the seams, which for weight are not sealed) to a surprisingly high degree. It is fairly wind resistant, but not to the extent I thought it might be. Have felt wind when above 20 mph. Not bad, but not its strongest suit. It does make up for it though in how breathable… Full review

Mountain Hardwear Women's Transition Zip T

rated 4 of 5 stars Stretchy, snug fit, that blocks wind. I really like this jacket. It's my go-to for skinning up trails when I'm working up a sweat, but the wind is too much to go in just a long sleeve shirt. I often throw on another jacket when it is time to go down. The durability and stretchability is great and with that it is becoming a go-to for windier climbing days since my other wind jacket leaves me sopping wet when I start to sweat (that'll be another review). I wish it was a little looser fitting so I… Full review

Sierra Designs Men's Cloud Windshell

rated 4.5 of 5 stars The micro-climate, windproof layer of the three-piece Cloud Layering System: This uber-light, three-season wind shirt provides extra comfort for a myriad of activities when the biting wind shows up. Next to your base layer, its breathability keeps you dry and warm while you’re active. It’s not an insulator when you’re resting, but it resists rain. Combined with the Cloud Puffy, it makes for a warm rest or camp down to the low 30’s. Its regular fit (some room in the torso and arms) plus technical… Full review
