Burberry, Cashmere, and Silk: Climbing Everest in Vintage Style

Did George Mallory and Sandy Irvine summit Everest in 1924, before disappearing on the mountain? Forensic tests on Mallory's clothing have shown that the climbers were adequately outfitted for high altitude conditions and could have summited in the clothes they were wearing, although the garments probably would have been insufficient for surviving a bivouac.

This month climbers Conrad Anker and Leo Houlding are climbing Everest, each outfitted with replica 1924 high altitude clothing that they plan to test at various points during their ascent. Anker and Houlding's outfits include cotton long johns, silk shirts, a Burberry top suit, and rabbit fur-lined leather motorcycling helmets. Read more about this trip back in time »
