Favorite local spots include North Manitou Island at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, MI, Kettle Moraine State Forest-Northern Unit, WI, Shawnee National Forest, IL. Other backpacking destinations include Sequoia / Kings, Wind River Range, Sawtooth Wilderness (Idaho), Isle Royale (x3) and Smokie Mountain National Park.
Sierra Club Outings Leader 16+ years. Have lead 60+ backpack trips with 5-14 participants, ranging from two to eight-days in length.
I also like to paddle, cross-country ski and road-bike.
Mountain-biking: I see the destruction and so disagree with at leasty 90% of public ORV usage. Wheels belong on roads, pavement or rails, and almost nowhere else. Do what you want on private property.
