I recently came across this cairn at the site of an old fire tower in the Ouachita Mts just adjacent to Rough Mountain.

I am used to seeing cairns on trails but I was taken aback by the size of this one. I put my 85L pack next to it to give a size reference. Has anyone else come across one like this?

In the North there are some ancient old rock cairns like that one. In the Great Basin, Native Peoples built drift fences to hunt sheep and antelope and often built stone cairns to look like men. It is startling to see them out in the middle of nowhere, and to know they are thousands of years old.
