Big Sky Soul x2 with Cuben/Cubic

A two-person freestanding double walled tent that weighs less than 1 1/2 pounds and compresses to a just over a liter size.

I've been using this tent for two summers through multiple Sierra Crest hikes. Its performance is, in a word, spectacular. This is the tent that I've always wanted.

My tent requirements are plush for one large person, adequate for two, under 2 lb trail weight for obvious reasons, free standing so as not to be futzing around with trekking poles and guy lines when a storm hits, tough material as setup is often on broken up talus and other abrasive terrain (tent weight wars keep pushing tents to use such light material that one has to be oh so careful with it), and double walled for breathability. Also easy to get in/out.

Big Sky nailed this. The tent quality is great, with seams being thoroughly sewed and sealed—said to be difficult with Dyneema as it doesn't stretch. Setup is fast, although some of the velcro pole attachments on the fly can be fussy. Although staking the tent out isn't absolutely necessary, it's helpful for breathability and to set up the fly for wind and rain. The tent has been through several Sierra thunderstorms with downpour, hail, and some tent flattening downbursts (for other tents in my party) with no problem.    

Although tight for two people, Big Sky designed the fly to peel back and lock down to approximately mid chest level on nice weather nights for start gazing through the mesh. Entry/Exit is through a single door at the head of the tent, with an easy to grasp full width zipper. The door is maybe 18" short of the fly, leaving a small vestibule big enough for boots and odd and ends, but not a pack. There's a small storage pocket on each side.

Only downside is the price. For me, worth it for the multitude of features and strength.

Note that Big Sky makes the same tent with conventional fabrics that weighs somewhat more at a competitive price. Worth a look for the uniquely functional design, but there's several other really nice tents at this price point.
