rated 3.5 of 5 stars

Add backpack straps to almost any container or object, so long as it fits within the straps. For use with a gear barrel, Pelican case, duffel bag, small kayak, etc... use your imagination!!

Pros

  • Universal Fit - "Wearer"
  • Universal Fit - "Container"
  • Variety of uses

Cons

  • Thin padding
  • Weak stitching
  • Not ventilated
  • Barrel / Hard-Case sold separately

Grey front handle and back pad, LESS padding, and yellow shoulder adjustment straps distinguish this harness from the more expensive "Expedition" model. This is the cheaper of the two barrel harnesses that Eureka! has made.

(Harness only! Container reviewed separately)

Fit (10/10): Unisex, Universal fit. The shoulder straps and hip belt are large enough to accommodate a large adult with a PFD on, but are also adjustable enough to snug down for a youth fit. Very versatile.

Comfort (5/10): Ventilation and padding are lacking on this pack. Due to the weight of the contents that you would usually see in gear containers, I would expect to see a lot more padding than what is provided here. If you've got a heavy rigid container strapped in, this will probably become uncomfortable in a hurry. There has been no effort on behalf of the manufacturer to ventilate the back of this harness.

Capacity (10/10): This harness capacity is VERY adjustable. It will easily cinch down to fit a container that's 30L or even smaller, but will also expand to accommodate a container approximately 80L or a bit larger. I might have a wild imagination, but I could see someone carrying a large rectangular Pelican Case, or rigging the straps to carry a small white-water kayak.

Ease of Use (10/10): Everything about this pack is ease-of-use oriented. The straps are placed intuitively, and all the adjustment is made by buckles and cinches.

Features (5/10): Not many bells and whistles on this one. Personally, I would prefer a harness with more small loops for hooking bungees, carabiners, or gear onto.

Construction & Durability (7/10): I'm not one to treat a harness gently, and I haven't broken one yet... But my friends have had to replace theirs once already, and the good ol' internet suggests that these harnesses have a reputation for the stitches letting go without much provocation. Food for thought.

Conditions: I have borrowed a friend's harness for one season so far, and it has performed to my expectations. I have used it in summer/fall, canoeing in the Canadian Shield (mostly Algonquin Park).
