A lightweight packable soft pillow for comfy nights.

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Packable
  • Soft
  • Warm

Cons

  • No real head support

My old Thermarest pillow had lived out its useful life, and so a few years back I was looking for something to replace it. I came across the Feathered Friends Geoduck (gooey-duck) pillow, and thought I'd give it a try.

On the plus side, it is light weight (6 oz), and packs down small in its built-in stuff pocket. The 700+ fill power down lofts up quickly, and pillow is cozy and warm. Workmanship is excellent... no loose threads or leaky down in the five years I've had it.

My only real disappointment is, that because it is so packable, the down fill compresses down as soon as you lay your head on it. So there is really no head support. I end up piling stuff underneath it at night, just so I don't have a sore neck in the morning. I don't know that there's any way to change this, without changing the essential design of the pillow. So if you are looking for good support, this may not be the best choice.

However, that reservation aside, this is a soft, warm, and comfy place to rest your head, which won't weigh you down.

NOTE: I don't think you can purchase this from any stores, but have to order it directly from Feathered Friends.

Works great if enclosed in a rolled up dry sack or compression bag, otherwise it flattens out and is too slippery to stay in place.

Pros

  • With the “fix” in my review, it is comfortable and soft, with enough loft to do the job.

Cons

  • Absent doing something like my referenced tweak, it flattens out very quickly and is too slippery to stay in place.

I was unhappy with this pillow as the inner part protrudes almost immediately like toothpaste coming out of the tube, which flattens the pillow. Moreover, the fabric was so slippery the pillow kept sliding out from under my head on my sleeping pad.

Then it occurred to me to encase the pillow in my sleeping bag’s compression sack. I rolled it up to make the bag tight enough to keep the pillow from flattening out (but not to the point of really compressing it). This kept the pillow from flattening out, as the compression bag acted as “borders”  the pillow could not expand beyond. This also solved the slippery fabric problem.

Now it works as was probably intended. With this “fix” it stays soft but fluffy, and is very comfortable. Five stars if using the “fix” or something similar, 3 stars without. So a four-star average.

Background

My experience with Feathered Friends’s products and customer service staff has been top notch. I have one of FF's sleeping bag quilts and the EOS jacket. Love both.
