Arthur Beale Oiled Wool Beerenberg Pullover

Heavyweight oiled wool sweater with extra-long sleeves and a roll neck collar. The star here is the wool, which is undyed, retains its natural lanolin oils, sheds moisture, and provides excellent warmth. The only ‘downsides’ are baked into this sweater: unprocessed wool is scratchy, and the roll neck that keeps cold out so nicely may not be to everyone’s taste. Also, it’s very warm, which also may be a pro or con, depending on what you want. BASIC INFORMATION Walk in 25 degree weather Arthur… Full review

Patagonia R1 Pullover Hoody

The R1 Hoody is one of Patagonia's iconic fleeces for a reason: Just the right amount of features, and expertly laid out. While the latest version (2021) isn't as warm as previous years, the added length and even better "mini gloves" are just too good to pass up. What's left to say about this—a clothing article bound to be included on the Mount Rushmore of Patagonia clothing (and perhaps on the entire outdoor industry's Mount Rushmore for that matter)? As it turns out, just a bit more! Patagonia… Full review

Stone Glacier Helio Hoody

An all-around, all-purpose midlayer that has been designed with the small details in mind, like a long torso length that stays tucked in no matter the activity, a chest pocket that sits below a pack’s sternum strap, and a sleeve length that is long enough to actually enjoy the integrated thumb holes. Useful in a wide range of activities and in a wide range of temperatures, from the single digits to 50°F. Testing Conditions I’ve tested the Helio Hoody for nearly four months during the fall and… Full review

Patagonia R1 Air Crew

A winning fleece layer from Patagonia. It’s light, soft, warm, and wicks moisture well. Despite the fluffy appearance, appears to be very durable. Great outer layer on cooler days, mid-layer for colder situations. INTRODUCTION Patagonia R1 fleece has been around for a long time. I first wore one twenty years ago. Light to mid-weight, extremely versatile for layering, it’s absolutely no surprise that it has remained, in evolved form, in Patagonia’s lineup. R1 Air Crew   The R1 Air merges the… Full review

Appalachian Gear Company All-Paca Fleece Hoodie

Alpaca is an incredible insulator, non-stinky, and still warm when wet. I love merino as a base layer, and have found the All-Paca Fleece to be a breathable, yet super warm next layer, functional even when wet. Lightweight and luxury feeling, is like wearing a hug, especially at the end of the day or during a break! Truth is I love alpaca. The animal, the fleece, visiting alpaca farms. I also love merino and have long "heard" as a spinner of these fine fleeces, that alpaca is not as durable, and… Full review

Kuiu Peloton 97 Fleece Zip-T Hoodie

Very lightweight fleece base/mid-layers—dry quickly and a lot of warmth for the weight. Kuiu is probably a name a lot of folks aren't familiar with. They are a brand that focuses on backcountry hunting, but they make a lot of really good outdoor clothing suitable for any outdoor pursuit. I'm reviewing both the Peloton 97 zip hoody and zip-off bottoms, same material. I had read some really positive reviews on the Peloton 97 zip hoody and was looking for a really light fleece top and this fit the… Full review

Patagonia Synchilla Snap-T Pullover

A good choice for the environment...and myself:-) I've owned a couple of these recycled and recyclable fleeces. I gave one of them away after five years—and it was still in great condition. The one I still use must be 18 or 19 years old and looks a bit tatty now, but it still keeps me warm. This is a simple design—no zips and only one pocket. I lost one of the collar snaps, along the way and the material is thin and pilled. The pullover carries scars from house painting days and from campfire… Full review

Craghoppers Corey Half Zip

A cosy three-season sweater which is durable, comfortable...but not really "technical" in the outdoor activity sense. High quality material and manufacture, minimalist design, which has its own appeal. Microfleece is one of the most useful weaves of this ubiquitous material. It resists pilling and abrasion much more effectively than looser, heavier fabrics. This means it is quite warm for its weight, but doesn't allow perspiration to evaporate as well as some competitor fabrics. I own a number of… Full review

Rab Nexus Pull-On

A classic piece of cross-over kit. I've got both the jacket and pull-on versions of the Nexus. Both of them tick lots of boxes for me. I find that the cell structure of thermic fleece works well to retain body heat as effectively as bulkier heavier fleeces do, so you can travel lighter. The 6% elastine component of the Nexus is spot on. These garments are very comfortable to wear and the pull-on is easy to get on and off. Freedom of movement is assured (a lot more so than pull-ons with lower elasticity… Full review
