Helle

Helle Knives was founded in 1932 when brothers Steinar and Sigmund Helle started making knives using the old forge on their farm in Holmedal, Norway. Without electricity they relied on rainwater to power the machinery, working fast and up to 36 hours at a time when the rain did fall.

The Helle sheath knives became popular locally, beginning a legacy of handcrafted, Nordic style knives.

In the 1930s Steinar cycled 565 kilometres across the mountains from the west coast to Oslo to sell his knives. Once he had sold every knife, he cycled back home.

Helle knives are still handcrafted in Holmedal on the West Coast of Norway. Each knife can require up to 45 manual steps. Helle knives are made using using natural materials and no two are exactly the same because each blade is finished individually by human hands. All Helle knife models have a Scandinavian grind, though specific edge angles vary.

Helle remains a family-owned company, and in 2019, third generation owners Svein-Erik Helle and Jan Steffen Helle took lead.
