photo: MAC-Gear 40 Degree Down Under Quilt under quilt

The Mac Gear hammock Under Quilt provides good fit and warmth. The Top Quilt and Under Quilts are handmade in Florida of good quality materials and workmanship. If you have a Warbonnet hammock, this under quilt will fit nicely under the shelf.

Pros

  • Ultralight
  • Good warmth-to-weight
  • Good under quilt fit for Warbonnet hammock
  • Good fit for the Top Quilt
  • Excellent price
  • Very compact
  • Cottage industry produced in USA

Cons

  • Leaks some down
  • Stuff sacks are a bit delicate

I got tired of trying to deal with sleeping pads in my hammock because I never could get them to stay in place while I slept. When using a mummy bag in my hammock, I could never get comfortable zipping it up and the bottom insulation did no good anyway. I guess my decision was made one cold night in the woods and one too many times my pad slid out from under me. Waking up cold had finally gotten old!

My next problem was finding a setup I could afford. There are many excellent products on the market, but I was not prepared to spend 500 hundred dollars on a set of quilts.

There are some synthetic options out there that are under 100 dollars, but they are typically bulky and heavy.

When I found this Under Quilt for under 100 dollars, I was ready to give it a try.

The Under Quilt was 85 dollars.

Here are the other specifications per my measurements:

  • Weight for each: 1 pound
  • Temp rating is 40 degrees F
  • Under Quilt Measurements:
  • Draped dimensions are 57" W by 67" L (I could have stretched it a bit more but this is the natural lay of the under quilt)

Some Commentary on the Dimensions

My measurements differ from the dimensions on the tags. When I measured, I did not stretch and hold the quilts, therefore my measurements are more realistic to how the quilts will fit naturally. I have provided images of the info on the tags below.

Use and Performance

I found that the Under Quilt was very easy to attach. There is a fastex type buckle on each end. The female side of the buckles mount on each end of the hammock and you can leave them there. There is a cord in the middle of the quilt that you can cinch around the hammock for a closer fit if desired.

Each end has elastic and three shockcords that snug evenly around the ends of the hammock. I found that I did not need the middle cord. I could achieve a very good fit without using it.

The length of the quilt is good for me. I am 5'9" and I had at least a couple of inches to move up and down and still be covered at my shoulders and feet.

I have a Warbonnet Blackbird hammock (not the XL version). Warbonnet has a shelf extension on one side where I was concerned about interference with the under quilt. In practice this turned out not to be a concern. The under quilt fit nicely and I had no issue with the shelf.

I have tested the quilt down to upper 30's F and found it quite comfortable. I have also used it in temps in the mid 60's F and did not overheat. I could leave the under quilt in place while adjusting the top quilt to ventilate.

The loft of the Under Quilt I estimate them to be around 1". The down appears to be of good quality and lofts up nicely when you remove it from the stuff sack. In fact, when I release the stuff sack cord, the bag immediately pops out as it lofts up.

The under quilt packs up compactly and nicely in its stuff sack. The stuff sack is made of the same material as the shell. The quilt is made of some type of very light nylon that is quite slick making it very easy to compact into the stuff sacks.

The stitch pattern is in 3" squares sewn through. This is typical for warm weather down sleeping bags and some down jackets.

Overall

At a price of 80 dollars, I am very pleased with this quilt. It performs well, is inexpensive, easy to use and carry.  In fact I may be asking MAC Gear if they can provide me with another set for cold weather!
