Redfeather Guide Series

rated 3.0 of 5 stars

The Guide Series has been discontinued. It was replaced by the Redfeather Hike.

The Redfeather Guide snowshoes are great for packing in huge loads in moderate terrain.
They are good for pulling sleds long distances through powder.

Pros

  • Come in three sizes: 23, 30, 36
  • Good in deep snow
  • Fits almost all boots: snowmobile, snowboard, NEOS,
  • even huge Mickey Mouse boots (Antarctica)

Cons

  • Older tube design
  • Only 1 year warranty
  • Expensive
  • Heavy
  • Crampon is meh, so-so

I use these snowshoes only rarely.

General

Deep snow big load transport snowshoes, great for hauling big loads to base camp

Description

I think Redfeather is discontinuing these, at least as of October 2016. They are not listed on the company website. I found one available on Amazon and some are available still at Sierra Trading Post and other vendors.

If you need some snowshoes for deep snow and really big loads, these may be obtained now at a good closeout price.

Details

Weight

5 pounds — these are not your ultralight backpacking snowshoes. These are mostly used by expedition teams that need to go through really deep powder with huge loads that can't be snowmobiled.

Quick Release Bindings

Single pull strap system is designed for quick and easy entry and exit. Adjustable to fit any size shoe or boot.

Hinge

Pivot rod allows tail of your boot to stay down during stride, keeping the tips up for greater stability. Ideal for use in deeper snow. The hinge is the weak point. The tail is hard to back out of bushes trees, etc. I tie some parachute cord to the back ends to help me get out of tight places.

Frame

Old style 7/8" extruded 6000 Series Aluminum.

Western style Round Tail design for maximum flotation.

The Ski Sled design just adds weight.

Floatation

The 36 inch model can "easily" carry 325 pounds and not sink in too deep.

My friend is 6'5" and weighs over 250 pounds.

Don't bridge these between two rocks carrying really big loads – you will bend the frames.

Crampon

The crampons are not so good. I find myself sliding down hills that have just medium slopes, ending up sometimes sliding down seated. Fancy term is "glissading." New England term is sliding down the mountain on your butt.

Calls to Redfeather to try to get better / replacement crampons were not answered. More impressive crampons are the extra large replacement crampons found on Tubbs snowshoes.

Decking

Vinyl –  stays soft in sub-zero temperatures. You need to kick off the built up snow.

Heel Lift

Dynamic lift: 1.75 inch lift to produce an angle of 15º.
