Older heavy but very warm bag. Well constructed, but has no collar. The draft tube is upside down for some reason!

Pros

  • Warm
  • Easy draw string

Cons

  • draft tube is upside down
  • Heavy
  • Does not pack down well (bulky)
  • No collar

This is an enigma bag to me. It says right on the label, "Down Insulated", however when you feel the bag, there is some sort of synthetic fiber inside. It must be mixed with down?

The bag is very warm and worked great for throwing over another light bag in sub zero weather. By today's standards, the bag is way too heavy and big. It packs down to about 20 x 14". Weighs over 5lb. It has no draft collar so can leak heat. I think for its day, the bag was probably pretty good.

Weird thing is that the zipper draft tube is on the bottom side of the zipper! It just flops down when you sleep and lets in cold air.

It seems like it's in the same condition as it was in the '80s.

I upgraded at some point and passed this along, but it served its purpose well when I had it.

In 1976, REI launched THAW, the subsidiary brand that produced much of REI’s clothing and equipment for many years.

"THAW" combined the first letters of the partners’ last names: George Trager, John Hartsfield, Lloyd Anderson, and Jim Whittaker, and REI served as a 50 percent owner. Six years later, REI acquired the remaining 50 percent to become sole owner.
