Gen Shimizu founded YAMA Mountain Gear in 2006 (under the name Alpinlite) after conversations on the Pacific Crest Trail. Shimizu designs and builds YAMA gear out of a historic, former lumber mill on the banks of the Blackfoot River, just outside of Missoula, Montana.
Shimizu says, "I’ve strived to get out on the trail as much as I can, and to design efficient, thoughtful, and beautiful gear inspired by my trail experiences. It’s important to me to make the most of by outdoor time, and I aim to help you find that balance that allows you to explore efficiently and comfortably."
YAMA has been a member of 1% for the Planet since 2019. It donates 1% of revenue to environmental efforts in its local community.
