This day marks the 160th anniversary of John's birth. I gave my only son your name as his middle name, Muir. I called myself Muir when a resource teacher in the Multnomah County, OR sixth grade residential school program in 1980. I hiked your trail in the Sierra in one felt swoop in 1971. In an age of cynicism and complacency, given the overwhelming forces pitted against nature in the name of materialism, economic determinism, and rapid global climate change, you are a light shining in the midst of the darkness. Happy Birthday, John.
