The 11th Outdoor Essential: Good Health

I've spent the last week making the acquaintance of the H1N1 virus, and subsequently mentally preparing myself to alter my Thanksgiving hiking and camping plans. In the midst of this I heard from a good friend who was supposed to be on his way to Aconcagua, but instead got a staph infection days before his flight and had to stay home.

From my fever-induced wisdom, I now nominate the 11th outdoor essential: good health (or at least an appreciation for it).

If you've already got it, congratulations! Try not to take it for granted. Remember to wash your hands frequently with soap and water or a hand sanitizer. Respect your body and tell it thanks.

If you don't have good health, I hope it's only a temporary loss and that you'll be up and outside shortly. If it's not temporary, I send my sympathies and well wishes.

Our bodies — the ones we regularly hike, climb, run, ski, and bike with — often get taken for granted, until something comes along to threaten them, and our many, many plans. Whether you'll be traveling down the trail or through airport security, preparing turkey dinner at a campsite or in your kitchen, this Thanksgiving be thankful for your health and the body that gets you outside to do what you love.
