Like I said, it does look a bit gimmicky. However, I have hiked with an umbrella in the past. Works great in light rain ( conditions like in the Pacific NW ). Anything I can do to keep away from my rain shell the better. I really don't like wearing it! Also, I obviously would not use it in a thunderstorm or very gusty winds. As for thunderstorms, an aluminum pole is probably the least of your worries.
Thanks for the input, I appreciate your thoughts! If I get one, I'll post a review.
