Should watch, Chris Morgan, Ecologist, on PBS Nature with his bear episodes and particularly Bears Of The Last Frontier.

He has several very close encounters with bears and some good lessons can be learnt.

tough to blame people for screaming and running when faced with a scary situation.  What a terrible loss for this family, and for the man's wife who witnessed the incident.

The NPS literature clearly distinguishes how to act when faced with black bear vs. grizzly, and the preferred response once you stumble across a grizzly, particularly with cubs, is to not make a lot of noise or run, but rather to make oneself look as small and non-threatening as possible; back away slowly; don't make eye contact; and talk in a low, quiet voice.  it also goes without saying that you carry bear spray in bear country, and unfortunately, it sounds like the couple didn't have any.

making a big, loud, visible display can, on the other hand, deter black bear from attacking.
