Muir was one of the 5 most important conservationists in American history. I worked on a contract in 1974 for the NPS in Yosemite. We had access to the Park library working with the Superintendent. Many of the volumes were signed in Muir's own hand. We got a tour of some unusual historic sites in the Valley and just outside the Park like the old sawmill where Muir used to work. We climbed Half Dome with no permit needed.

Muir was right there with us the whole time. He was a great inspiration especially as a young person.

That was 40 years ago. It may be torn down for all I know. I vaguely remember that was outside the Park on Sawmill Flat near  the Wiwona Road.

A permit is needed to climb Half Dome, isn't that a day hike? or do you mean you actually climbed it up the face?

I lived in Yosemite from Jan-May 1980 winter camping in the high country, did a rim hike from the Winona Tunnel along the south rim all the way to Tenaya Lake then on around to west of El Cap and came down the old Oak Flat Road. That was in the days before mandatory permits for hiking, they were voluntary and I rarely used them.

I did not go up the face, but up the backside cables like most normal people. It is a day hike if you like 10,000 feet in one day.
