Anyone know anything about the new line of tents from Columbia? I'm looking to buy a medium sized family tent but can't afford the Kelty that I would really like. Consequently, I've been looking at Eureka and Coleman tents but I met a saleman that is very excited about the new Columbia models. I know they make great sportswear but can't seem to find any information about these tents. Having suffered through several very wet trips with a really sucky tent, I'm reluctant to buy something when I haven't seen any reviews.

Actually, I work at a store that sells both Kelty and Columbia tents. e-mail me if you still have questions - by now you may have gotten something.
Shoot, it feels kinda weird to reply - I haven't done it before, but I probably could answer your questions, so here I am.

Columbia is NOT making tents - they have just licensed their brand name to an Chinese tent maker called Northpole. They are giving their apparel dealers a big discount to pick up the line, since the initial reception to thier tent designs was very weak. I think they are gimmicky. The best family tents out there right now are by a company named Paha Que. Check them out www.pahaque.com

Yes, I have seen one that I will be picking up next week. But have yet to find a picture of it on the net. They are made by NorthPole tent makers. Good construction and price.

I don't need to know about family tents, I am more interested in whether or not the Columbia tents (Northpole) can stand up to the weather of Algonquin Park. I am looking at the two man and I am impressed by the design (which no doubt drew upon the experiences of the Ozark line of years past). Can this thing take spring rain in Algonquin? That is the 'to-be' question of tents.
Cheers

I have a six person Columbia tent. I have nothing but good things to say about it. Very durable, well ventilated, great in thunderstorms as I found out last weekend.

man, I bought a columbia tent 4 days ago.. and it's going back, I unpacked it to find burn holes right through it, then later that night, (as the sky was filling with lightning) the front zipper split. Luckily they have the new "self correcting" zipper, which didn't work and I ended up with nothing but a half a door through inch's of rain this long weekend. However, I do love the design of the tent, and it did keep the water out incredibly (all things considered) I just got a bad (or maybe used) one. Strongly recommend though, just because it's an adventure to own one.. haha

I know this posting is old and that you probably purchased your tent by now, but I own a Columbia tent which held up well to the rains of Memorial Day Weekend in Wisconsin (really lousy weather). We took on a little water near the doors, but nothing to complain considering I did not waterproof the tent. Whatever you get- waterproof it. Most tents have the ventilated ceilings so you don't have to worry about the fabric breathing. It also helps to get a tent roomy enought to keep your gear away from the sides of the wall. Good Luck!
