Re: Base load pack weights
Suspect the answers will be all over the map. A couple years ago I was schlepping ~30 lbs. base weight. Now after some serious retooling I am starting out at just under 15 including the clothes on my back, empty bear cannister, and hiking staffs. Suspect even 15 lbs. base is considered heavy by some. But vs. 30 lbs. it is a world of difference in daily wear and tear. Steve

Re: Base load pack weights
Between 18 and 20 pounds, though it might be lighter by the end of the week--I expect delivery of a factory 'used' Luxury Lite pack any day now. The weight difference between the LL and my existing pack is about 3 pounds. If my gear fits the new pack, I'm still looking at 15-17 instead of 18-20.
The bigs, for me, are a 5lb Dana Design Hyalite pack, a 4+lb TNF Tadpole, a 1.5+lb Therm-A-Rest UL Long and a sub-2lb Lafuma Warm 'n Light 800 extreme bag. I use a Penny Stove, so with fuel, mess kit and everything my cooking setup is under 1lb. The 'little stuff' adds up to 5-6 pounds, hence the 18-20 base weight...

The wieght always depends on the location and weather conditions. I go to the high Sierra and pack for sub freezing temps, and chances of showers. Usually with fishing gear and just about everything most would carry base is about 6.5 Lbs. Sometimes lighter if I team up with someone. Thanks to the www you can really find good stuff and ideas to save wieght. Gosamar Gear sells a pack that wieghs less than 7 oz. saving many 5 Lbs. and probably is more comfortable too.

6.5Lbs. ! That's amazing, especially in sub-freezing temps. While in the army, I think my trenching tool weighed more than that!

I'd be very interested to see your gear list, Jeremy.
In my mind, I'm thinking...
Gossamer Gear pack: 7oz
Tarp: ~24oz
Groundsheet: ~8oz
Bag: ~32oz
Pad: ~12oz
That's 83oz, or 5lbs, 3oz. Leaving you 21 ounces for everything else: cooking, first aid, etc.
Seriously. I would *love* to see your gear list.
