guadalupe mountains food and water advice
i am currently trying to plan on what food and how much water to take for a 4-day, 3-night backpacking trip in the guadalupe mts. i'm still somewhat new to all of this. i like the freeze dried meals, but they are really expensive and take water to fix. i have seen that we need to take 1 gal of water per day per person. that is going to weigh about 32 or so lbs if i estimated right, which doesn't leave me with too much room for much else except bare essentials. some advice would be helpful. ;)

Freeze dried - yeah, the store bought ones are expensive. But, you can work with things like that yourself. I love the dried garlic mashed potatoes, and will just combine that with foil-packed chicken, or some hard salami/aged cheese for a meal. There's also nice powdered hummus and beans out there for a meal base. Just look for websites related to backpacking food. Some people just use powerbars for about every meal.
Water - err...yeah. You'd be using a lot in the summer. Try to plan your hike around known permanent waterholes/seeps/intersecting a river down there at some point. I haven't been in the Guadalupe, but I'm sure that'll limit your sources considerably.
Good luck!
