Can Sombody identify this spider

Can Sombody identify this spider

while backpacking in the Dolly Sods Wilderness, my friend and I decided to stop by the forks of the Red Creek and do some swiming. Thats where I saw this big spider. I tried many web searches but havn't had any luck identifing it. Here he is

Six legs? I suspect this is an insect, not a spider. Spiders have 8 legs. It looks a bit like one of the group of "skimmer" insects, but I would have to look in one of my insect books. The "skimmers" (not a technical name, of course) are noted for using surface tension for skimming along on the surface of the water, sometimes at amazing speeds.
