Zucchinis are effective against more than bears. Whenever the zucchinis started to ripen in the valley, everyone tried to give (a.k.a., "unload") the surplus on friends and neighbors. These squash seemed to double in size and numbers overnight. Soon, you would start closing your blinds if you saw someone headed your way with a zuch. (Shudder...)
