Wanted - 70's era packs & other stuff

Wanted to buy, 1970's era backpacks from Rivendell Mountain Works, Hine Snowbridge, the Yak Works, the Kletterworks, Wilderness Experience, Jansport, etc... Need to be in usable condition (need not be pristine) and need to fit someone 5'10".

I am also interested in catalogs by these and other companies from this era.

Lastly, outerwear by Class 5, size large or extra large.

I can make up any number of Rivendell Jensen Packs that
you might want, in any size XS thru XL. These are the
authorized packs made from the original patterns. I have
an assortment already made, but can custom run any size
order within reason. I am not formally marketing these,
but have been making them for friends for the last 15 years.
Let me know what you might be interested in.. Eric

Re: Rivendell Pack

I started the company that became the Yak Works and was the designer of the Yakpak, and I purchased (and still own) the assets of Rivendell Mountain Works from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in 1981. I personally own 1 Rivendell Jensen Pack, a couple of Yakpaks, and 1 Rivendell Bombshelter Tent, and the Rivendell patterns still exist. None of these are for sale. I do have extra copies of some of the old Yak Works and Rivendell catalogs. If interested, contact me at the above e-mail address.

Re: Rivendell Pack

Greetings Don,

My name is Larry Amkraut and I have used the Rivendell Bombshelter in extreme winds. I test gear now for Rock & Ice, Couloir and Climbing Magazines and have used many of the strong lightweight tents presently available. I don't think any of the new tents are as strong as the Bombshelter.

I have a Gore-Tex model, perhaps the last one made before you got the rights to the tent from Rivendell.

I used to live in Lovell, Maine. Lovell is close to North Conway and New Hampshire's White Mountains. I would take the Bombshelter up Mt. Washington and spend the night in ferocious winds. It truly is "Bombproof."

I used to write for Western Backcountry Magazine (no longer published) and Wilderness Camping (merged with Backpacker) and I reviewed your Yak Pak Trekker in one of them. I still remember your ads, "The pack that makes the frame obsolete."

On Memorial Day, 1979, I stuck my foot in the Atlantic off the coast of Eastport, Maine and began what would be a four year walk across America, finishing at the Golden Gate Bridge on Memorial Day, 1983. When I began that walk I wore your big Yak Pak Trekker. I used it and your Alpine pack for much of the walk. Unfortunately, the Alpine was stolen from me while I worked in a carnival on the Michigan/Wisconsin border.

After I walked across America, I walked from Mexico to Alaska. I made the mistake of loaning the Bombshelter to someone who used it in the rain, packed it wet and forgot about it for three years. After I finished my walk I received the tent back in less than prisitine condition.

I'm sorry I'm rambling so but I have very nostalgic feelings for the Bombshelter (I also own a Jensen pack, the Doctor Expando) and your Yak Paks. Your packs took a little while getting used to but once I was comfortable with the carabiner shoulder straps I really liked them. They are the most stable packs I've ever worn.

Are you considering bringing back the Bombshelter? If you are I could do reviews in the magazines.

If you could spare a Rivendell and a Yak Pak catalog I'd sure like to buy them. Your gear was and is state of the art and the catalogs would bring back great memories.

On Wednesday, I'm off to the Outdoor Retailer Trade Show in Salt Lake City. Are you still involved in the industry? If you're going to be at the show, I'd like to swing by and say hello.

Regards,

Larry Amkraut
