I've seen them in Target for under $25, might be worth a look. Sierra Trading Post frequently has them on sale.

Many Walmarts also carry them now for $10 , made by Swiss Gear ( of knife fame),. Pretty deciently made. Anti-shock system, adjustable alumimum body, carbide tip, small compass in the grip, basket, tip, etc. weigh in at 11.5 oz ea.

My buddy and I have broken 3 poles between us within 2 years; a Komperdell and two Lekis.
I've abused a set of carbon fiber Black Diamond flik-loks and don't plan on retiring them for some time...
Don't skimp out on poles; either they will be heavy or they will break... (personal opinion)

Try a local thrift store for old ski poles. I bought a pair for me and cut them down to my preferred height--I found I really liked the handles and how they not only gave me a comfortable grip, I liked the large "ledge" my hands had to rest on. And because they had the "powder basket" on them, I trimmed them down to about the size the that comes with the collapsible type. I find they don't really snag or hang up. I really like them, and would do it again.
If you look at the studies done, whole poles versus collapsible poles not only have less vibration, studies show that they provide more overall stability.
I liked my own poles so much, my hiking buddy bought a pair which I cut down to the preferred height. I have put at LEAST 200 miles on them, and they are still working just great.
