DESCRIPTION:
Bergans of Norway is a manufacturer of high-end backpacking and expedition equipment. Though their products are typically only available in Europe, their exceptionally engineered rucksacks are a favorite among elite military units worldwide ranging from British SAS to U.S. Special Operations Forces. Due to it's modularity, unparalleled comfort, and durability, this particular rucksack (Bergans Alpinist Escape Standard) is currently said to be standard issue to U.S. Navy SEALs for artic warfare training in Alaska. The modular design makes the rucksack easily customizable for any excursion profile. The carbon fiber and S-shaped aluminum internal frame with shock absorbers help negate the downward force of the pack during movement. The pack's suspension system, coupled with its generous padding, affords the pack's wearer maximum comfort, stability, and maneuverability even with loads exceeding 100 lbs.
I have personally used this pack extensively for hikes ranging from 3 hours to 7 days, carried loads between 30-80 lbs, in weather ranging from snow-rain-sun. I found the pack roomy enough to not even have to use the side pouches or lid. Even without the lid, contents stay dry as the pack cinches down in a way that prevents water from entering. Comparing the Bergans packs to others I have used from North Face, Kelty, Marmot, Mystery Ranch, and few others on various expeditions Bergans is by far the most comfortable and durable of the bunch. But the feature that distinguishes the Bergans from all other packs I've used is it's suspension. The pack feels solid when secured to your back and allows you to maneuver and climb with an unexpected level of confidence and comfort. I typically end up being the trail blazer and still feeling less fatigued than my companions on the more challenging terrain.
