I'm going to be in Okinawa for half a year and would like to know if I should bring a rope or not. Any info on the climbing there(if any)would be useful.
thanks

Hi Brandon,

I haven't ever asked about Okinawa up to now, but someone from among my Japanese climbing friends is bound to know. Subject to a very busy period at work, which has been keeping me away from the gym and the rock, I'll try to ask around and let you know.

And if you make it up to the Tokyo area any time during your stay, get in touch. Subject to both of our schedules and preferences, I'd be happy to go climb.

Apologies for the delay in following up. I've been underwater at work, but took a few minutes to do some web searching on climbing in Okinawa. There's a fair amount of stuff in Japanese, but almost nothing in English. Here are some of the more useful results:

http://sqeez.virtualave.net/index-j.html
(Japanese language site with info on climbing in Okinawa)

http://www.okinawa.usmc-mccs.org/dolphins.nsf/tri?openview
(English language site with address and info on an Okinawa climbing gym)

(Japanese language site of a guide service that apparently does one day

I'm currently in Okinawa and there are a few places to climb.
Most of it is bouldering but there's also quite a few sport routes at the northern and southern end of the island. I personally like Zatsun the best.
Tokyo Bill replied with a good site; http://sqeez.virtualave.net (if you have problems entering this address got to www.msn.com and search Okinawa climbing, the link always works). The only problem with this site is that the English version is under construction so you have to enter the Japanese version. You will find maps written in Kanji but you can probably find someone to translate it for you, you'll also find topos, route grades, and some pictures.
Probably the two most popular places to sport climb are Cape Hedo and Zatsun/Party rock.
I've been to both these places and both are pretty good, you'll find routes that range from 5.7 to 5.13c/d. Most routes are 30' and a few at Zatsun are about 80' high (i.e. Easy Money 5.10). I like the rock at Zatsun better because of better friction and more cracks, Hedo's mostly pockets, but that's just personal preference.
I've also been to a few bouldering places, hard to find some of them. I don't reccomend Katsuren. It's really sharp coral. But it looks like Gushikami might be a good spot.
If you need any more help just contact me and I can give you some info.
