Ready to make the jump from vertical rock and see how I fair at altitude by trying the Machame route on Kili this summer. I'm living in the Middle East in Abu Dhabi(a displaced Canadian) and since there's no Whitney or Rainier to start with, Africa is pretty close. Thing is I don't want to pay the ridiculous amount that pre-booking a trip requires (same thing in South America and trekking peaks in Nepal, blah, blah, blah). Pay early, pay way too much and i figure there always has to be spots open with trips running all the time. Anyone have any info on how easy it would be to just show up in Moshi or Arusha or Machame for that matter and pick up a guide (since they're mandatory) and head out? Thanx in advance
